Yr 8 city experience: Indigenous Hip Hop star ‘Baker Boy’

Mira Russo, Bijek Chol, Jovita Molinaro, Siena Scalogna, Eloise Robinson, Grace Murphy, Maya Pinto, Nastasia Viola, Klaudja Sikic and Grace Tull from Year 8 were selected to go to a special performance by Indigenous Hip Hop star ‘Baker Boy’ in the city.

The performance was well received and the Academy students learnt a remarkable amount. It was a rather unique opportunity, one which the students enjoyed. Thanks to Ms Hannah Hale for accompanying the students and to Ms Glenister for responding to the call.

‘Being selected to go to the Baker Boy concert was a huge honour. Not only did we get to learn and be educated on indigenous culture and traditions but we also got to get involved by saying simple words in their language and taking part in traditional dances. We also had an amazing time singing and dancing along to some catchy songs performed by Baker Boy.’ Thank you

‘The Baker Boy concert was amazing! The music was incredible and the concert was a lot of fun. We took part in a Welcome To Country Ceremony and they taught us an Aboriginal dance. Baker Boy and the featured rappers are so talented, and everyone was grateful to be invited to such a fantastic event.’

DAV DEBATING

On Tuesday 7 June our Academy Debating teams participated in Round 4 of the debating season at St Bernard’s College in Essendon.

Our A team debated a secret topic. This means the students have only one hour to prepare for their given topic. Although the team lost against Bacchus Marsh Grammar, our Debating Captain, Isabella Morgan, won best speaker.

The B team, with another secret topic, argued that our politicians should be selected by artificial intelligence. They won this debate against St Bernard’s with Jasmine Tobin winning best speaker.

Our C team was unsuccessful with their secret topic against PEGS but we are proud of the way the team handled their first attempt at a secret topic.

Our D team (pictured below) argued that the ABC should only show Australian-made content. They won against St Albans Secondary College, with Cara Egry being selected as Best Speaker.

Well done to all our teams! Next round is the last one of the season before finals begin.

RAGE in the city

It was a great pleasure to take the RAGE Book Clubbers on an excursion to Dymocks Book shop in the city. Before visiting Dymocks, the book club students learnt about the original Coles Bookstore which was the same location as Dymocks. Mr Coles opened the store during the Gold Rush and was famous for allowing anyone in to read for as long as they wanted. His store had musical entertainment and a tea room. Our book clubbers became our book selectors for the MRC and what a wonderful job they did. The students chose a variety of both fiction and non-fiction books. There was so much browsing and shopping it was necessary to relax with a hot chocolate!

To quote one of the students, “This excursion is perfect.” The success has been watching our students borrow the new books immediately as they hit the MRC shelves.

The season of Winter has been embraced and celebrated in the MRC. Ms Salvo has once again dazzled us with fantastic displays of all things “Winter” and “Snuggle up with a good book” recommendations. The MRC is like a warm hug, a place to escape the cold! Happy Reading.

WORK EXPERIENCE: Yr 10

Beyond the College gates and within a nearby laneway, three year 10 students were very fortunate to visit a film set last week. They were privileged to be hosted by an outstanding production company undertaking a major film project in Melbourne. Needless to say the students were thrilled to soak up the film atmosphere while meeting some of the crew.

Their wonderful supervisor, Jack Tosi and Assistant Location Manager reported ...

The girls were great on set yesterday, very well behaved and a pleasure to deal with. I think the crew enjoyed having visitors as a few came to them for a chat.

Being on the set of a film was a great experience. We were able to see all the behind the scenes action and how much detail goes into every single thing you see to help enhance a film. We worked with a location manager who was kind enough to answer any and every question we had about how a production like this would take place. We witnessed big parts of the movie as well as something that may not mean much to the audience but had a lot of effort put in by many. It was surprising how many workers are needed on set and how much work they put into their job. Overall, we are extremely grateful to be given this opportunity to gain an insight into this line of work and hope to continue our interest in media and film.

All students are expected to be on placement [unless prior approval has been granted] during the final week 12-16 September of Term 3. There are no Year 10 classes scheduled for that week. These mid-year holidays are an ideal time for Year 10 students to source their placements and finalise their paperwork.

We have places for Academy students available at GHD Engineering, Bundoora Park Farm, an Architecture firm, Coburg Aquarium, and some others. Students may contact Mrs Allan to secure any of these placements.

If parents/guardians are able to offer a student one week of experience in their industry we would be delighted to hear from you.
