A reminder to students and parents that the end of semester is Friday 3 June.  All Year 11 and Year 12 studies will have an end of semester examination.  Timetables will be distributed shortly.  The Year 11 examination period is from 6 June to 17 June, the Year 12 examination period is from 6  June to 14 June.

Students must have a study/revision timetable in place and consistently review their class notes in preparation for these examinations.  Any students who would like assistance with study skills are most welcome to contact one of the Year Level Coordinators,  or myself for assistance.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHARLI EVANS (YEAR 12) AND ALEXANDRA WALTERS (YEAR 11)

On Wednesday 25 May, Charli Evans (Year 12) and Alexandra Walters (Year 11) represented Frankston High School in the regional finals of the VCAA Plain English Award.

The competition involves students giving a six minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice, and then a 2-3 minute impromptu speech with only five minutes preparation time; Charli’s prepared speech was on the need to listen to minorities, and Alex created a scathing speech on the enduring legacy of sexism in parliament. The students worked with Ms Georgie Long over the past month to plan, refine and rehearse their speeches and practise responding to impromptu topics, and Ms Maddison Tremlett drove the students to the competition at Aquinas College in Ringwood and supported them on the day.

Charli and Alex received great feedback from the adjudicators on their performance and public speaking skills.

TERTIARY EXPO AND CAREERS EXPO – A HUGE SUCCESS

Congratulations and a huge thank you to our Careers Practitioner, Mrs Sharon Bourne for organising a very successful Tertiary and Careers Expo on Tuesday 31 May.  Mrs Bourne successfully secured an array of tertiary institutions to attend. This important event enabled students to meet with representatives from the institutions and gain valuable information on tertiary courses and pathways post Year 12.  Thank you also to the Heads of Department who were available to discuss senior school subjects at the Subject Expo. The positive feedback received from students and parents/carers highlights the success of the afternoon/evening.

YEAR 12 FORMAL

I am looking forward to attending the Year 12 Formal on Wednesday 8 June at the Mornington Racecourse.  It is a wonderful night and an excellent way to finish and celebrate the end of Semester 1. Thank you to Ms Carla Caminiti and Ms Kelly Mitchell for their excellent organisation of the evening.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR VCAL STUDENTS

The VCAL students, under the excellent direction of Mr Heath Booth and Ms Wendy Goodman, have now completed their project to create a new outdoor social communication hub for teachers alongside the Senior Campus staff area. The Senior VCAL students have developed their project management skills in Personal Development Skills with MS Goodman and have applied the numeracy and trade skills they have been taught by Mr Booth to bring this amazing project to completion.

The space looks sensational and the re-use and re-purposing of materials aligns with the sustainability principles of Frankston High School.

FARESHARE EXCURSION

A very successful excursion was held at Fareshare.  For 20 years Fareshare has been rescuing surplus, quality food from supermarkets, farmers and other businesses that would otherwise go to waste.  The food is made into meals and given away free to front line charities, such as soup vans, homeless shelters, women’s refuges and community food banks.  Our students made 1000 meat & veggie sausage rolls and prepared 70 kilos (plus the same in vegetables) of mince for use the following day.  The Fareshare team were impressed by our Senior VCAL students. They worked hard, efficiently and learnt some valuable cooking skills. The Fareshare. chef commented that the students also collaborated well and treated each other with respect and kindness.  Thank you to Mrs Sharon Bourne and Mrs Ellen D’Ambra who accompanied the students on the day and helped make the meals with the students.

END OF SEMESTER REPORTS

End of semester reports will be available online at the end of Term 2.  This is a comprehensive report detailing your child’s progress for the first half of the year.  It provides families with the opportunity to celebrate achievements and develop an action plan for future improvement.  If parents have any enquiries concerning their child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact the subject teachers or Year Level Coordinators.
