Middle School News
YEAR 9 MEGAR WEEK
20-24 June (last week of Term 2)
During the last week of Term 2 we will be running a very special program for Year 9 students. The focus will be on their wellbeing and building their resilience. It has not been easy for students as they have returned to school from two disrupted years. This is a chance to focus on skills and attitudes that will help them achieve greater success at school this year and in the future. We think this is a very valuable week for students and strongly urge all Year 9 students to attend.
YEAR 10
It has been a busy Term 2 for our Year 10 students with Middle School Examinations, Year 11 Examinations (for any student who studies an accelerated subject), Intermediate Interschool Sport and Career Expo. If you were not able to attend these events, your Compass newsfeed has several resources regarding Year 10 into 11 Course Counselling for you to peruse. We were very impressed with the maturity of our Year 10 students. It was exciting to hear them engage in conversations with Heads of Domain and tertiary provides about their pathway and career options. Thank you to Mrs Sharon Bourne (Careers Coordinator) for organising these wonderful events for our Year 10 students
YEAR 10 INTO YEAR 11 COURSE COUNSELLING
Over the next month the school will continue to share information with our Year 10 families about Course Counselling and important dates. Please watch out for these emails and Compass notifications and reach out to the school if you require any information. We break Course Counselling into three phases: 1 EXPLORE, 2 PLAN, 3 SELECT.
1 EXPLORE
In the first phase students are encouraged to explore the 2023 Senior School Course Selection Handbook on Compass (see below). Have a read through this to explore the two different Senior School certificates (VCE or VCE Vocational Major) and find out what each subject is about. Students are also encouraged to return to their Morrisby account and use the tools that they have access to, to help them explore their career and subject ideas. We encourage students to select subjects based on their interests, careers aspirations, further study requirements and their learning strengths. Students will need to select subjects which meet the prerequisites requirement for the tertiary courses they may be interested in. The most up to date 2025 VTAC Prerequisite Booklet will be available in July. Students will be able to access this via the Frankston High School Career Website (accessible via Compass star tab).
2 PLAN
The planning phase of Course Counselling requires students to:
- Submit an application form if they wish to be considered for a place in the VCE Vocational Major program OR
- If they wish to continue with their accelerated subject and study it as a Year 12 subject in Year 11.
All VCE-Vocational Major applications and Accelerated Subject Expression of Interest Forms are due into the Senior School Office by 3.30pm Tuesday 14 June 2022. Forms can be found on Compass or on our careers website.
NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED
ALL students who are currently studying a Unit 1 & 2 subject MUST submit an Accelerated Subject Expression of Interest form. Students do not automatically progress into a Unit 3 & 4 subject in Year 11 if they are currently studying a Unit 1 & 2 subject in their Year 10 program.
3 SELECT
During the select phase of Course Counselling students will have a Course Counselling interview where they can discuss subject preferences during their scheduled appointment. Appoints will occur over three days (2 August, 4 August and 10 August).
The booking system will be open for you to make an appointment for your course counselling interview on Monday 6 June 2022 and it will remain open until the course counselling appointments begin on Tuesday 2 August 2022. The process for booking an appointment is the same as parents/carers use to book a Parent Student Teacher Conference. A guide was emailed on Friday 3 June. If you have any difficulty making an appointment please contact Tina Thomas, our Senior School Office Manager, on 9783 7955 and she will be able to assist you.
