Around Our School

Years 9 and 10 Innovation Experience

Throughout the end of Term 1 and the first few weeks of Term 2, our Innovation class were set the task to create a food business with a budget of $10 each. We had to create a report including information such as how many items we needed to sell to break even and personal goals we had throughout the task. After that, our Years 9 and 10 Innovation class had a fantastic opportunity to pitch our business idea to the business owner from ‘Down the Street’. Rob was very insightful, giving us all feedback on how we could improve our business ideas. Considering Rob runs his own successful business, (along with his wife) it was great to hear his feedback.  Mrs Sally Sanderson, the head of Business Studies, also played a huge part in this experience. Considering she is a Business teacher, and she has much knowledge on the whole idea of a business pitch, her feedback meant a lot to us. We would like to thank Rob and Mrs Sanderson on behalf of the entire Innovation class, for taking the time out of their days to give us a more realistic, insightful, business pitch experience.

Takeover Melbourne Experience

On the last Wednesday of Term 1, the Year 9 LEAD class got to meet the ‘Takeover Melbourne’ crew with Kano and Jumess, two ABC journalists, who talked to us about leadership and the importance of our stories.

To start the workshop off, we watched many different videos of other peoples’ stories who have passions from rocks to gymnastics. We then talked about starting our stories and events that may have challenged us. After that we talked about and wrote down our values and things we are good at. While doing that we did a challenge and some students won their signature cow stress ball or a little bag. At the end of the lesson, we were all able to create our own story that may have been a challenge at the start but actually ended up a great experience. These stories can be submitted to be in the running to win and have a video made of them. It was an amazing experience, and we are so lucky to have done it. Thank you to Mrs Sarah Bahramis for organising it.

Victoria Police Incursion

On Tuesday 5 May, our Middle School Teenagers and the Law classes were delighted to receive a fantastic presentation from officers Matthew Goodwright and Neil Prosser from Victoria Police. The officers covered a range of topics that supplemented and contextualised the content we have learned in class this year, particularly on the topics of criminal law, law enforcement and young people’s involvement with our criminal justice system. The officers provided fantastic descriptions of a day in the life on the job, the training required to become a police officer and all the different career pathways available with Victoria Police. Finally, the students had a chance to ask the officers some pre-prepared questions and listened intently to their answers.

Some quotes about the incursion from our students:

“I appreciate the Police Officers for taking the time to present to us. Learning about their training and their daily lives was really interesting!” – Hayden Hughes, Year 9.
"Thanks to this incursion, I have learned that Police work harder than we think and have bigger hearts than we think." – Charlotte Swinburne, Year 9.

A huge thank you to Matthew Goodwright and Neil Prosser for engaging in such a worthwhile session with our Middle School students. We cannot wait to have them back next semester.
