SSV INTERMEDIATE BOYS SOCCER

On Wednesday the Intermediate Boys’ Soccer team travelled to Wonthaggi Rec Reserve to play a round-robin against other schools.

The Boys’ team, led by Bradley Buttigieg, was set to play Leongatha Secondary School, Bass Coast Dudley and Bass Coast San Remo.

Mary MacKillop’s first game was against Leongatha Secondary College. As many of the boys had never played soccer before, they were just getting into the rhythm of it. The boys’ lost their first game 3-1, but it was a great effort by both sides. A particularly good effort by the team’s new goalkeeper, Sam Carmody and a crucial consolation goal from Henry Wynne.

The boy’s second game was against Bass Coast Dudley who had many experienced players. The game was tightly matched but a clinical penalty from Henry Wynne created a lead that the boys’ held for the rest of the game. Other chances were created such as a delightful ball by Lincoln Hamilton to the feet of Max Sheahan who couldn’t quite execute. The game was well played and was a good win on the boys’ behalf.

The last game against Bass Coast San Remo was a great game with goals flowing for Mary MacKillop. One goal in the first half wouldn’t create a lead big enough to hold onto. The team gathered at halftime and were encouraged to stick to the game plan. The opposition were getting tired and Mary MacKillop scored seven unanswered goals. An exceptional game by Henry Wynne with five goals to his name.

A great day for the boys but unfortunately the team didn’t quite manage to reach the next stage of SSV. A huge effort by the team and a great day overall.

Well, done lads.

SSV Intermediate Girls Soccer

The first game against Mirboo North saw us take the win 2- 0. Zoe took the first goal with power. Gabbi took the second goal with determination. Our strong back line – Emme, Audrey with Niya taking charge. Middle line -Emily, Savannah, Kayhlyn, Molli, Jasmine along with Zoe and her knowledge of the game, was invaluable. Gabbi, Anna R and Anna H working together with precision to attack the goals.

The second game against Bass Coast Dudley started off with a snap. Gabbi just pumped the ball into the goals. Standouts were Emme’s aggression to the ball, from the back line and Anna R’s attacking the ball. Audrey’s use of her body in defense was a standout and Niya was the gun who organised our back line, as well as teaching the other team what offside meant – much appreciated - game was tied.

3 Penalty shots – saw Faith in her element. We then went to single penalty shots of which both sides seem to have a lot, with Dudley taking the win.

Third game had an interesting start and a few interesting interactions with the other team. But to the girls’ credit – to be able to be a part of our team’s laughter, to see the support and encouragement our MMK girls showed each other, to see the sportsmanship shown to the other teams – is just a wonderful thing to be a part of. MMK can be very proud. Again, we went to penalties with the other side taking the win.

Year 8 Camp

After having to reschedule their camp from the beginning of the year our Year 8 students finally headed off to Waratah Bay for their surf camp! Although the weather may have been a bit on the chilly side the students didn't seem to notice participating in a variety of activities including camp favourites surfing and the high swing!

Making Music around the College

It has been a busy start to the year in the music department. So much has happened.

We have appointed a new Woodwind and Piano teacher – Mr. Jason Xanthoudakis, and a new Percussion and audio teacher – Mr. David Robinson. Both are very talented musicians and a wealth of knowledge for our school. We are very lucky to have them join our music department. We saw the return of the soundwave concert series held on the grassed area on Friday lunchtimes, Exams, and a bustling music department every lunchtime with students keen to practice and make music. Term 2 has seen the formation of a Junior Choir, the Lit Group and a Fusion Band.

The Year 10, 11 and 12 Music students have been busy preparing for SAC assessments and Exams, providing many concerts at lunchtime, during class and after school for students. They are improving all the time and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their outstanding efforts.

At the start of Term 3 we will begin rehearsals for the Walkathon and a Term 3 Concert featuring many of our students showcasing their talents in a range of ensembles.

We are taking new enrolments for Semester 2. If you would like your child to begin music lessons here at the college, please contact Ms. Winterhalter to collect an enrolment form. Please Note: Some instruments are subject to availability.

Have a pleasant break and remember to keep practicing, as every day you miss, you go back two days in standard!! Perfect Practice Makes Perfect.

HUMANITIES NEWS - ASX SCHOOLS SHAREMARKET GAME

Congratulations to Ty Hall, Darcy Methven and Silas O’Halloran (known as ‘Tag Team’) in Year 12 Economics. They were our school’s highest-performing syndicate in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game with a portfolio value of $51,596.63 at the end of the ten weeks of trading. It is interesting that of the 19,351 syndicates playing nationally, only 13% of participants ended the game in profit. The average portfolio value was $47,769.90. Well done boys for making a profit during quite uncertain and volatile times in our world.

Registrations for the next ASX Schools Sharemarket Game open on July 14th. Trading will commence on August 18th and conclude on October 27th. Information for registration will be on SIMON next term. Students from any year level are encouraged to join the fun!
