Why join our Board

School board members are active leaders in our schools. They have an important role of supporting strong professional leadership and ensuring effective teaching for all students through informed governance.

Parents/caregivers and people in the wider community can be parent representatives. School boards need to represent the diversity of their school communities to ensure a bright future for all our children.

School board elections are the opportunity to vote for candidates who will make a positive difference for children’s education. We need more people willing to use their skills and experiences for the benefit of students!

Time to nominate

You will soon receive a nomination form from our school in the post.

As you fill out the nomination form, think about good reasons why you or the person

you are nominating should be on your school board.

Note:  If you are nominating someone, make sure you and the person you are nominating sign the form. If you’re nominating yourself, make sure you sign both sections (candidate and nominee).

Once complete, send it back to your returning officer by the date specified on your form.

If you don’t have children at the school and still wish to step forward for the school, you’ll need someone on the parent electoral roll to nominate you.

How do I fill out a candidate statement?

If you’re the candidate, you can submit an optional statement (up to 400 words) and a photograph. Your candidate statement may include:

  • Experience
  • Qualifications
  • Abilities
  • Previous involvement with the school
  • Reasons for standing for election
  • Interests
  • Anything else that can be reasonably linked to the education of children

You must make sure your signed candidate statement is received by the returning officer by the deadline shown on your form.

If you have any questions, give us a call on 09 8361213 and ask for Julie or ring NZSTA on 0800 353 284.
