BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE

A sub-committee of School Council

WORKING BEE

We are holding a school-wide working bee to plant an Indigenous garden at the front of the school. There will be a variety of jobs to do including pruning and planting, so join us on Saturday 23rd July, 10am-12noon.

School Council held a Democracy Sausage Sizzle at the federal election. Thank you to parents who helped out, as well as parents who donated cakes for us to sell. We made just over $1,000 which we will use to buy native grasses for the front garden.

Any queries re the working bee, please contact Beth on 0431219980 or bethmellick@gmail.com.

TREE PLANTING

We have received a $10,000 grant from the Federal Government’s Queen’s Jubilee Tree Planting fund in which we will put in some shade trees on a couple of bare areas in the central area of the school. Work will commence shortly on this project, and established native trees will be planted by a contractor.

LANDSCAPING GRANT

We also received a grant from Federal Member for Bendigo, Lisa Chesters. Lisa visited the school and spoke to students about what they would like to do with the $10,000. This money will go towards laying turf in one of the central areas of the school.

We are looking for a parent with the appropriate equipment who might be able to help us move large rocks into the central school area for landscaping, and for students to use as seating areas.

SHADE SAIL GRANT

We have received a $25,000 grant for shade sails outside the canteen so students have some protection when queuing for food. The sails will also extend over the central area where we will put seating and create an outdoor eating and learning space. The company supplying the shade sails is ‘backed up’ with jobs so we don’t envisaged that they will get to us much before the end of the year, just in time for summer!

We also have a shade sail rescued from the Etty Street campus that we will have arranged to be erected up the top near the music buildings.

PLAY AREAS

The Student Representative Council has asked for ‘four square’ and handball courts and another basketball ring to be constructed. Our trusty outdoor education teacher, Cole Waters, will be working with Geoff from maintenance to get these projects going.

OVAL REFURBISHMENT

Unfortunately, we have consistently missed out on funding to upgrade our football and soccer ovals. Therefore, members of the sports learning area are working with School Council to do the upgrades ourselves. Weed control took place over the school holidays and we are investigating buying couch ‘plugs’ to resurface the ovals.
