National Walk Safely To School Day

Friday 26 May was a very busy day for staff and parents. Junior School and ELC students. and their families. took part in the National Walk Safely to School Day at both South Plympton and Brooklyn Park. The rain held off and, while it was a little chilly, the students enjoyed being with their families and friends. Students were supported by College staff who were highly visible in their safety vests! Parents were encouraged to hold their child’s hand as we crossed each road, looking right, then left, and then right again.

This event helped to reinforce lessons that students in Years 1 and 2 have been learning in their Health unit this term. If your child enjoyed walking part of the way to school, perhaps think about making this a regular way of getting to school with other friends and families, taking part in chats, enjoying one another’s company and starting the day off on an active note. Thank you to all those who took part in our inaugural Walk Safely to School Day event, we hope to run this event again in 2024 and possibly include a bite to eat with the hot drink.

Interschool Tennis Competition

On Friday 26 May, we held our first interschool Tennis Competition held at South Plympton for students across both campuses. The rain finished with enough time for the courts to dry to allow these players to compete without any fear of slipping and sliding. To those who came out to support and supervise their children (despite the very brisk conditions), we say 'thank you'! We hope to hold another competition later this year.

SACSA Rijken Cup

In Week 3 this term, we competed in the Rijken Cup, which is the pinnacle SACSA sporting event for our Senior School students. Our Senior School squad had a total of 33 students who took part in: Division 1 for Netball (Boys and Girls), Soccer (Boys), Basketball (Boys and Girls) and Volleyball (Boys and Girls).

We are pleased with the results for such a small contingent:

  • Girls Netball - Runners Up🥈
  • Boys Netball - Third place🥉
  • Boys Soccer - Third place🥉
  • Girls Basketball - Runners Up🥈
  • Boys Basketball - Runners Up🥈
  • Girls Volleyball - Fifth overall
  • Boys Volleyball - Seventh overall

The students represented the College well in the sporting community. They all arrived in uniform, were organised and prepared to support one another throughout long and tough competitions. The students have all displayed the skills and abilities in one or more sports; an achievement to be very proud of. Team success is not achieved by just one player, but that one player can help their teammates rise to the occasion and achieve performances that they may have not been able to before.

The experience for our teams is one that we would like to see grow in the future with a full squad and all events entered in 2024. It is a wonderful opportunity to compete against other Christian schools and enjoy the camaraderie of playing hard in all events with your peers. Congratulations to the students who participated and thanks to the H&PE staff who gave up many hours of their time and the parents who supported them.

I hope that the students will remember the many enjoyable and memorable moments experienced this week, some funny, but many to be proud of.

Emmaus Club Sport

Term 2 Winter sport seasons have now commenced.

Our Junior and Middle School Soccer programs have started and our first round of Junior School Soccer matches were held on Saturday 27 May in the southern suburbs. The rain for most part held off and the sun made an appearance at many of the match venues. We had one home match held at the College with the Under 8’s playing on our synthetic pitch. At half time the scores were 1 – 1, with much cheering and support being given from the sidelines. It was also nice seeing some of the students helping their younger siblings learn more about the sport. For all our Soccer teams, all match information such as times, locations and opponents can be found on your child’s respective TeamApp pages. Parents/caregivers who have not registered or can see this information email sport@emmauscc.sa.edu.au to help you with this primary source of communication for the season.

The College Basketball teams that play during the week and on Saturdays are continuing to play and develop as individuals and within their teams. Our Monday night program is continuing to grow with teams now having a waiting list to be involved. Those parents/caregivers who have children involved in our Monday night Basketball program, it is your responsibility to supervise your child when not playing or having their training session. College staff can not officiate matches, coach teams and supervise your child that may not be playing at that time. If you have any issues with this, please email sport@emmauscc.sa.edu.au. We are now looking to hold an official development course for students interested in learning more about the sport, become more qualified officials and ultimately be paid very good money to officiate some of our junior weekly matches. We will be emailing those students who had previously expressed an interest to be involved in an official capacity soon with these specific details.

With all our sporting teams and opportunities in full swing, it is important that we all, as players, spectators, officials or volunteers, conduct ourselves in a manner that reflects our Colleges ethos demonstrating appropriate role model traits that helps to create a positive environment that students want to remain a part of now and in the future. This may be the start of students' sporting interests, and we know that we all develop at different rates, so encourage, assist, persist, and if needing more clarification, speak to one of our College’s staff members and we will be more than happy to help where needed.

Upcoming Events

This week, we have 12 teams competing in the Year 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10 Boys and Girls SACSA Soccer Carnivals held across the metropolitan area. We hope to report back impressive team results.

In Week 7, we have our Year 7/8 and 9/10 Boys and Girls Volleyball competitions, which we are in the preparation stages of. We hope to do as well as we can in this event as a united and supportive squad.
