Junior School, South Plympton

Identity Day  - Parents are invited

Week 10, Friday 7 July, 9.30am - 2.00pm

Emmaus Performing Arts Centre

Junior School South Plympton Campus

On Friday 7 July, our South Plympton Junior School students from Year 1 to Year 6 will take part in Identity Day. This is a chance for your child(ren) to share something special about themselves with the whole school.

Foundation students will be working on a project “About Me” in their class with their teacher.

Identity Day Display Subject Criteria

We ask that parents help their child choose one part of his or her identity to create a desk top display using a small cardboard box for the event. Asking the following questions may help with this process:

  • Is this part of your identity important to you?
  • Is it interesting for others to see or learn about?
  • Is it unique or something not everyone does?
  • Is it small enough to fit on a table with other student displays?
  • Is it different from the display you made two years ago?

Creating the Display

Your child's display should be something about them. Objects, photos and other materials for the display will come from home. Your child should begin gathering and preparing everything they need now, but please keep the display items at home until the week of the event.

Display Theme Ideas:

  • AFL fan
  • Artist
  • Avid reader
  • Scout/Guide
  • Skateboarder

The Big Day

On Friday 7 July, the last day of Term 2, each student's display will go on a table in the EPAC, and classes will take turns hosting (i.e. standing by their displays and answering questions) as parents, staff and other students file by to have a look. All items will be safe and supervised, and classroom doors will be locked when the class is not hosting.

Buddy Reading

Every Friday morning, excitement builds as our 84 Year 1/2 students await the weekly Buddy Reading sessions with their Year 9 Buddies. This initiative began as a service component of the Year 9 Rite Journey program. It has been so successful the teaching team decided to run this program for the whole year!

Buddy reading promotes cross-age mentoring, assisting both older and younger students to build ongoing successful relationships. It is such a blessing for everyone! We are constantly amazed by the way reading buddies connect and have opportunities to support each other in life’s journey. For example, one of our Year 9 girls, who has just become a big sister, was paired up with a student whose family are about to welcome a little one to their family.

We want our children to develop positive attitudes to reading. Older mentors who model and encourage our younger students with their reading highlight the wonderful lifelong benefits of reading for our wellbeing and skill development.

At Emmaus, we want to intentionally build our community culture. Buddy programs run across the Junior School classes. We are excited to be encouraging further opportunities across our Junior, Middle and Senior subschools. Watch this space!
