Safe on Social – Cyber Safety

On Wednesday this week, as part of the College-wide initiative to promote ‘Wellbeing Week’, all Junior School students listened to a guest speaker, Amy Haddadi, from Safe on Social, a leading cyber safety education, training and consulting company. The presentation covered various topics ranging from cyberbullying to online gaming (and everything in between) before students learnt about the necessary skills they need to have a more positive experience online.

Mobile phones, laptops and other digital devices and forms of technology are an ever-present reality for our students each day. Although the majority of social media platforms used by students require them to be at least 13 years of age, many primary school-aged children are still accessing these websites/applications. The NSW Government has collated various resources intended to help guide parents/carers around setting boundaries and having conversations about social media with their children.

Below, are a number of tips you might like to try at home in order to support your son/s in keeping themselves and others safe online.

  • Create a family technology agreement with your son on how and when he can use any digital devices owned.
  • Understand the basics of online safety, educate your son about dangers to be aware of and set some appropriate rules with him.
  • Be mindful of your son’s potential exposure to social media platforms. It is easy for children to still access various social media channels without creating their own account!
  • Encourage good digital habits in your son from an early age.
  • Be proactive in having conversations with your son about his privacy and security online.
  • Teach your son about his ‘digital footprint’ so that he is aware of what this means before he starts sharing any information online.
