HEALTH CAMP
FEDERATION UNIVERSITY HEALTH CAMP
Last Wednesday and Thursday, I went to Federation University in Churchill to attend the Health camp. It consisted of exploring the courses that were offered at the university and all the different career paths in health. On day one, we investigated the courses in groups that Fed Uni have to offer in the health sector. This included Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Pathologist, Physiotherapy, Sports and Exercise, Nursing and Midwifery. Following this was activities based on the particular health sector we were learning about, like doing CPR for nursing and using a communication board as a speech pathologist.
After 2 rotations, we had lunch at the university’s cafeteria, which had plentiful options for everyone. After a short afternoon break, we had a presentation from Monash University about their medical program that I was particularly interested in. Students from Monash spoke about their backgrounds and what their pathway was to get into Monash which was very insightful. Following this we walked to our accommodation to get ready for the Inspiring Health dinner. The dinner consisted of 4 presentations from people in their respective health careers and how they got there. There was a range of different speakers talking about their career, such as nurses, to paramedics to hospital directors and many more.
Students were assigned to tables with people from different health careers. This allowed us to chat to them about their life in the health sector. This happened while we ate a 2-course meal that was very delicious. After a good night’s rest, we were greeted with a warm buffet style breakfast and once again had a guest speaker talking about the need for Health Workers in the Gippsland area.
Then it was off to TAFE Gippsland Morwell Campus to learn about the aged care, nursing, and allied health courses they offer. Following this were activities again based on the health sector, like putting on all the PPE required for nursing and how nurses move elderly people with machines and using their simulated mannequins.
Thankyou to the South Gippsland Bass Coast LLEN and the Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN for organising this very interesting and insightful camp.
