Around the School
Congratulations, Lexie!
Lexie Heinrich and Darcy Parsons were state finalists in the Dairy Cattle Junior Judging Competition in April. They both performed very well amongst many experienced competitors up to the age of 25 years. Out of 20 state finalists, Lexie was one of twelve junior judges asked to comment on the microphone about how she placed the cattle. Lexie ended up fourth overall in the State Final. Later in the day, Lexie also joined a Dairy Youth Challenge team sponsored by Lockhart Ag. The Youth Challenge involved teams of ten young people aged between 6 and 21 years of age. Each of the nine teams at the show had to clip, parade and judge dairy cattle under a strict time frame and Lexie's team was placed 5th. Lexie was given the honour to judge cattle and justify her placings on the microphone on behalf of her team. Great work by both students, and a special congratulations to Lexie on her achievements!
Year 2 Learning
Year 2 mixed various ingredients together to see how well they would combine.
All of Year 2 made their own paper by using water, tiny pieces of paper, and a blender.
Year 2 had the best time getting their hands dirty whilst making gloop as our science experiment.
Year 4 Stephanie Alexander Class
The Year 4 Stephanie Alexander class had the opportunity to share their lesson with Year 11 students Isabella Eberle and Mandy Nguyen and our international exchange student, Alice Arcaini. The senior girls assisted Mrs Pinson to deliver the class with a focus on food health and safety, sharing their deeper knowledge of chocolate manufacturing whilst also leading the class to make delicious chocolate chip muffins. Italian was also spoken to test the students! The students loved this interaction and, of course, tasting their muffins.
Tournament of Minds - Primary
Over the past six years Moama Anglican Grammar has taken part in the Tournament of the Minds Competition (TOM). In TOM we compete in NSW and our regional final location is Wagga Wagga, NSW. This has been a very successful program and well supported by the participating students and their families, with many teams progressing to NSW Finals in Sydney. In 2019 the Primary Language Literature Team placed with ‘Honours’ at State level, an outstanding achievement from approximately 700 teams across NSW. In 2021and 2022 two primary teams achieved ‘Honours’ at the Regional Finals.
WHAT IS TOM?
Tournament of Minds (TOM) is a problem-solving program for multi-aged teams of students who work together to solve a demanding, open-ended Long-Term Challenge. The team must also participate in an unseen Spontaneous Challenge® on Tournament Day. The program has Primary and Secondary divisions. Tournament of Minds’ aim is to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.
We will begin the TOM program during Term 2 2023. The program will operate from Monday 19 June (week 9) after school from 3:15 to 4:30pm and will continue at this time and day into Term 3. There may also be a need for some lunchtime sessions during Term 3. There will also be one Sunday rehearsal on Sunday 20 August 11:00am-3:00pm.
Teams of seven students (maximum of four students from one year level) are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge (during Term 3) without assistance from teachers, parents or peers. It is anticipated that two primary teams of seven students will be entered for 2023.
The competition day is Sunday 27 August in Wagga Wagga, to be held at Sturt Public School. A bus will be provided for students, or private travel arrangements may be made.
If you feel that your child would enjoy participating in the Tournament of Minds competition and can commit to the competition day, after school, Sunday and some lunch time sessions, please fill in the expression of interest note emailed to Year 3-6 families and return to the Primary School office by next Friday 9 June at the latest. Please bear in mind that places for this program are strictly limited to 14 students only from Years 3-6 and it will be competitive to gain entry.
