INSPIRING CURIOUS MINDS

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

In writing, we have been learning about explanation text. Explanation texts include an introduction, 2 or 3 descriptive paragraphs expanding on how or why, and then a conclusion. They are non-fiction texts and can include topics such as natural disasters like tornadoes or tsunamis.Eamon

In grade 5/6 multiplication and fractions has been our focus this term in maths. We have all been in the learning pit. We have shown persistence to master new skills such as equivalent fractions. We have been conferencing about our learning goals. In maths my goal is to order decimal numbers, hundredths from smallest to largest. – Tilda

Our Curiosity question in term 2 is “how do natural disasters impact us and the world?” Tsunamis, big waves, fires burning flames, floods of rushing water, Tornadoes funnels of wind and earthquakes the floor rumbling are just a few examples of natural disasters. As the name implies these extreme weather forces are made entirely by natures elements. Humankind has not created them meaning we cannot control or stop them. We have been learning a lot of new vocabulary describing these forces of nature. We sorted these words into groups call tier 1, 2 and 3 words. We have also been linking our focus of natural disaster to other sessions like passions or reading where we’ve been reading a class novel about tornado, the book is called ‘A Storm of Strawberries’.  Natural disasters are a really fascinating subject, and we have lot more to learn about them.Alberta

This term we have changed the way we have done passions. We have to invent a prototype to help humanity, but it needs to link to a passion we have about the world. I have decided to do my passion about helping animals in dreaded natural disasters. Others in my class are doing completely different thing. I love passion lessons because it is so open ended, and I have tons of fun doing it. I look forward to doing it every week, I wish we could do it every day.Lani

We are really excited about our goals. Everyone has a reading, writing and maths goal. Our goals are written on sticky notes, we have to show 3 pieces of evidence that we are able to do these goals. Then we celebrate by removing our goal and adding to the achievement wall. We’re really proud of our progress with our goals this year. Imran
