CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Writing the students will be continuing our narrative unit; by demonstrating what we know by using the structure to guide our planning.

VOCABULARY

Narrative writing: A piece of writing that focuses on telling a story. Narratives have characters and a setting as well as a narrator who tells the story.

Narrative structure: Is the framework that a writer uses to tell their story. The narrative structure may include:

Orientation: Outlines the setting & characters.
Initiating event: The start of the story.
Internal plan: What the characters decided to do.
Attempt: What the characters did.
Direct Consequence: The consequences of the characters actions.
Ending: The solution to the story.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Have your child plan a narrative writing piece using the following structure:

Title - Is your title exciting and engaging?

Orientation - When is the story happening? Where does the story take place? Who are the characters?

Initiating event - What ‘kicks off’ the story?

Internal plan- What did the characters decide to do?

Attempt - What did the characters actually do? (First… Next…Last...)

Direct Consequence - What happened because of what the characters did?

Ending - How will the story end?
