Moot Court Excursion
On Thursday 11 May, Year 10, and Year 11 students in VCE Legal Studies and Year 10 Commerce class, went on an excursion to Monash University to their Moot Court.
The day started with an introduction to the Moot Court set up and what it is like to study law at Monash University. The main reason why we visited the Moot Court was to run our own trial: A murder trial.
Tucker Barbaro (played by Lola Allain in Year 11), was accused of the murder of Ryan Caruso. The defence team (Lily Li and I) and the prosecution team (Jordan Carter), had to argue whether Tucker was in fact guilty. The jury was mostly made up of the Year 10 commerce students with a few VCE students apart of the 12 jurors required for a criminal case.
By the end of the day the jury had found the accused not guilty of murder, however he was found to be guilty for manslaughter. The day was used as a learning opportunity with the VCE students completing Area of Study 2: The Presumption of Innocence which is focused on introducing students to criminal law. Overall, the day was really fun, and everyone was able to take something out of it.
