Cross Country and Athletics Team Lunch
On Monday, we celebrated the outstanding performances of both our Cross Country and Athletics teams with a special lunch in the Cahill Centre.
Ms Larratt acknowledged the contribution of the cross country team to win the Girls Junior Shield for the first time, and the significance of every participant trying their hardest for the combined school result.
We then reflected on the athletics season last term and provided certificates to the following students for commitment to training and for winning their events.

Water Polo
The Schools Water Polo competition is up and running on Friday evenings this term. The College has three competing combined teams in the Year 5/6 mixed, Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 girls’ competitions.
The Year 5/6 team includes Year 5 students Isla Christie, Ruby Sproule, Grace Fenton and Amelia Hall who are all representing Mount Carmel for the first time in water polo, but contributing extremely well to the team. The team commenced the roster with 3 strong wins, including 14-4 against Cambridge/Bruny/Corpus, 17-3 against Waimea and 12-2 against Taroona. The roster has now been split into divisions, with the Mount Carmel/St Mary’s team earning a place in the strong Division A roster. Their last game was a thriller against St Virgil's, eventually being defeated 9–10.
The Year 7/8 team have also had an impressive start to the 2023 season. The girls are currently in 3rd on the ladder with 3 out of 4 wins, defeating Clarence 13-4 and Friends 6-5. Leading goal scorers for the team include Year 8 student Amelia Sing, with 15 goals and Elka Kuylaars with 8 goals.
Year 9 students, Hannah Jager, Myla Lee, Chloe Webb and Ella Woodruff have joined forces with students from Taroona in the Year 9/10 roster. They had a tough first up match against the other Taroona team, but regrouped and enjoyed a good win against Sacred Heart 9-3 in Round 2. The team is currently placed 8th on the ladder of 11 teams.
Thanks to families for all their support, particularly with transport to trainings and games, and assistance with scoring. Good luck to all our teams in the remainder of the season.
Primary Netball
This season the College is represented by two teams in the JSSATIS Primary Netball competition, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6. It’s great to see some students trying netball for the first time, and combining well with the more experienced players.
Both teams are well supported at training and games by their coaches and managers, who are excellent role models, and generous of their time and expertise. The Year 3/4 train and play on a Wednesday with outstanding guidance from Year 10 students Annabelle Gatehouse and Bailey Van Den Broek, with support at matches from Lisa Cranefield. Thanks to Ash Nally for her dedicated coaching of the Year 5/6 team, and to Year 9 students Phoebe Gatehouse and Lucia Devine for helping with training on Thursdays. We wish both teams all the best for the rest of the season.
Secondary Hockey
Mount Carmel has entered a combined team with Taroona in the Hockey Tasmania Girls Division 2 School competition on Monday afternoons. The team includes Ela Stedman-Sinnitt from Year 7 in goals, three students from Year 8 and seven students from Year 9 at Mount Carmel, and the four Taroona players are from Year 9 and 10. There is mix of players with state level experience, club experience and beginners, and the team has been inclusive and supportive of all.
Unfortunately, there are only three teams in the roster, which means two byes in the roster. The team lost to Friends’ 3-0 after a close first half in their first game, but bounced back with a more organised structure against GYC the next week to win 8-0. The team is looking forward to testing themselves against Friends’ again this week.
