Dear parents, carers and students

And just like that - we are halfway through term 2 and it's a busy one for our teachers and students!

Work Experience

Later on, this term, our year 10's will embark on their work experience placement for one week and our Careers Councillor Kathy Miller is working hard to make sure our students get their preferred placement.

Our year 10's will spend the week with employers to offer insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides young people with the valuable opportunity to:

  • develop employability skills
  • explore possible career options
  • understand employer expectations, and
  • increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence.

During the week, teachers at John Fawkner College will visit students to celebrate their achievements at work experience.

Teaching and Learning and planned school visits

Also this term, our staff will take the opportunity to gain some insight into the teaching and learning that goes on in our primary schools. This coordinated and well-planned outing is an opportunity for our staff to share their teaching practices with our primary school colleagues, as well as gain a greater understanding of the primary classroom and the excellent teaching and learning that happens there.  Staff are really excited! We would like to thank Fawkner Primary School, Moomba Park Primary School, Pascoe Vale North Primary School and Belle Vue Primary School for opening up their doors and accommodating the visit.

We are serious about Literacy

Every week our year 7 students dedicate one session to Literature Circles.  Literacy Circles gives students the opportunity to talk about books with their friends - just like a book club. By reading the same book together in small groups, students build a community where they learn critical speaking and listening to deepen their understanding of books and recognise that reading is fun!

I like literature circles because I can read in peace without interruption! I like the way I learn how to read and I remember doing this in primary school too - Moussa 7B

I like literature circles because I learn about new words and I can read with my friends - Sofiya 7B

If you are a parent of a year 7 student, don't forget to ask them about Literature Circles and how much they enjoy reading with their friends.
