Anchorage House News

We finish another great term together in Anchorage with your lovely boys enjoying time spent together and also enjoying many of the Recreation activities that we have on offer. I am looking forward to warmer weather next term so we can get the Anchorage boarders out in the sunshine enjoying each other’s company. In boarding the importance of building relationships can’t be underestimated and the connections they make will be with them for life. We talk a lot in our daily meetings about respect for each other, the house and also about the culture of the house. I am excited for the Year Nine boys to be taking the next step in their boarding journey to Eclipse House next term and I also feel a little sad as I will miss their energy and smiling faces. I hope that your holidays with your families are warm and relaxing.

Year Eight Dinner

All the Year Eight boys got dressed and jumped on the bus for an exciting trip to Due South. When we arrived we saw an old blue car. I told the boys it was made in America because the steering wheel was on the left hand side. We had a good steak and lots of laughs. I tried mussels for the first time and quite liked them. We followed that with some gelato before heading home.

Possum Spotting

Dr Bronte Van Helden from South Coast Natural Resource Management met us on Mount Clarence to look for ring tailed possums at night. We wore headlamps to look for their eyes reflecting back to us. It was good to get outside and have some fun. It was surprising to discover how many possums there were in the trees. At the end, we saw a teenage possum, known as a sub-adult. It had its long tail wrapped around a branch and stayed in view for us to observe. Afterwards, we treated ourselves to an ice cream at York Street Gelato.

Recreation

Gym sessions continue to be a popular activity after prep in the evenings. Many boys are keen on practising basketball before the summer competition commences next term. With Winter sport coming to an end, the boys have enjoyed relaxing in the house by cooking or watching the Brownlow Medal count. Next term we will return to compulsory recreation, we often do this in Term One and Four. There seems to always be less sporting commitments and we think our students need some encouragement to get out and about. Our Recreation Administrator plans many amazing activities over the weekend and we would like our students to attend these. In Term Four all students will be expected to go on at least one recreation every weekend. We don’t allow them to sit in boarding all weekend, we want them to be out and about and we know from research that this is what is best for their mental health.

Hang Tough

Albany Indoor Adventures visited the the Kingfisher Fair with their Warped Wall and Tough Hang Challenge. Patrick Buckenara, Steven Wiech and his younger brother Craig all had some fun trying their hands at these activities.

Eclipse move for Year Nine

At the end of Week Two the Year Nine’s will be moving to Eclipse to allow them to settle in and learn the routines prior to next year. This also enables us to start the upgrade to Anchorage by moving all the remaining boys into one wing. It would be helpful if you could take as many of your child's unused possessions home between now and Week Two.

Best wishes to our latest birthdays! Jack Lange turned 13 and Finn Alvarez de Toledo celebrated his 14th birthday in September.  Many happy returns boys.
