5/6 T

Welcome back to term 4! I hope you all had a nice break and are feeling refreshed. Only a few more weeks of Remote Learning and we will be back in the classroom, yay!!

We are looking forward to a busy term in grade 5/6 with lots of opportunities to make memories and connections both onsite and online.

Activity Week

This week we have offered some fun opportunities for the students to enjoy. We started the week off with a grade 5/6 games afternoon where we played 'Family Feud'. Well done to the girls in 5/6T who beat the boys by 4 points at this game! The students also enjoyed drumming  and a science incursion today.

Maths

In grade 5/6 we have started a unit on Geometry. In this unit the students will be taking a closer look at 3D objects through identifying their properties,  constructing simple prisms and pyramids,  connecting three-dimensional objects with their nets and drawing different views of prisms and solids.

The students will be using items from their take home packs during this unit and we kindly ask that the connecting blocks that have been provided are kept in a safe place and returned to school when we are back onsite.

Literacy

In literacy we will begin the term by focusing on persuasive writing. This week we have been looking at interesting ways to begin a persuasive piece by using our 'sizzling start' skills to kick off the arguments. The students have been practicing how to capture the readers' attention by implementing a range of skills such as using humour, dialogue, emotive language and beginning with a narrative start.

Here are some of the students sizzling starts for the prompt ' recess should be extended'.

Andrew:

“Only if we could finish this game”, Jerry sighs, frustrated that he couldn't play his match of basketball because he had to line up due to the shortness of recess. Children all around the world experience the same thing and have to cut things early   because of how short recess is. We demand that kids deserve and should get 1 hour long recess.

Cicil:

‘Run faster” I yelled. The clock was ticking, only 5 more minutes on the clock. Time was running quickly, recess felt so short. I don’t even think this is fair, if we work for 2 hours in the morning, why can't we at least get 1 hour of play?

Evan

Fresh sourdough. Crunchy outside, soft inside. Mayo. Squeezed from the bottle. Classic. American. Mustard. Melted Parmesan. Crisp lettuce. Juicy tomato slices. Seasoned like mad with salt and pepper. Oh Yeah! But his bite of sweet heaven was interrupted by an ear piercing roar… Ding!Ding!Ding!

The herd of humans charged at him, the poor boy was dead meat. The sandwich was whacked out of his hand and began to fly in the air, pieces landing all over unsuspecting children. Don’t you think this innocent child could’ve saved his sandwich, Uh! If only recess was just longer!

Gabby:

Just as I was going to shoot the winning goal the bell rang... all hope had been lost! “Play time should be longer so we can play a full game”. Most kids would agree with me, we spend a lot of time in the classroom and when we do go outside it’s only for 45 minutes. Being outside is good for your health. Getting energy out and seeing friends an extra 15 minutes of outside playtime will finally allow me to shoot the winning goal.

Inquiry

The theme for our inquiry unit this term is 'change'. We're going to look at Civics and Citizenship, different levels of government, rules and laws and how we can bring about change in our school, local community, country and world. When we return onsite in a few weeks, we'll undertake some different role plays to bring to life different local, state and federal government decision making processes.
