Returning to school

It is wonderful to have students preparing for a return to school, however with change (even positive change) there can be feelings of nervousness and anxiety. Life is filled with uncertainty and the levels we are currently experiencing are unprecedented and immense. There will be adjustment periods for some students as they return to school  and as parents, we can assist them by implementing strategies prior to their return.

Preparation will assist your child with the transition to returning to school. Below are some useful strategies that may be helpful.

  • Establish a routine                                                                                                                            Routines support emotional development and children benefit from environments that are predictable to them. Even during times of uncertainty, eating breakfast at the same time, going to bed at the same time and completing chores can provide a sense of stability to a child.  As students are preparing to return to school it would be beneficial to establish a routine to make the transition as gentle as possible.
  • Prepare yourself and your child                                                                                            Schools will be given guidelines and procedures to follow regarding Covid safety and with students returning to school it is important that you have  conversations with your child to prepare them for their return. For example, you may be required to drop your child at the gate when you may normally walk them in. This is an important conversation you have with your child so they are aware of this change and can . Discussing the importance of correct hand washing and the use of masks with your child can help them adjust to the new protocols. Remaining up to date with all current school communication so the family is prepared for a return to school will keep you informed.

                                                            RETURN TO SCHOOL

Simple strategies can assist with the first few days and week and reduce stress levels within the home. Involve your child as much as possible when completing the tasks as this creates a sense of responsibility and accountability.

  • Have your child ensure their school uniform is ready for them to wear
  • Pack school bags the night before
  • A suitable bedtime will provide adequate sleep
  • Wake in the morning with adequate time to get ready without rushing
  • Eat a healthy breakfast
  • Leave for school on time
  • Discuss the collection point for school pick up with your child
