The subtle art of Persuasion

Alison Sanza

Teacher - English

It has been a productive term for Year 7 English, with students enjoying a return to classroom collaboration, discussing and sharing ideas face to face.

One recent assessment task required each students to select and research an issue of their own choice. They then had to write a persuasive speech about the issue and present it to the class.  This allowed them to learn more about something of personal interest to them and then to share their subject with their peers.

While there may have been some nerves before delivering their speeches,  students were very supportive of each other, and enjoyed listening to their friends deliver very diverse and interesting speeches.

The key areas of focus for the students were:

  • Identifying a clear contention
  • Identifying three supporting arguments
  • Conveying a clear structure
  • Using persuasive techniques to back up the contention.
  • Demonstrating effective presentation skills through appropriate eye contact, gestures, tone, pace and volume

See these fabulous examples below.
