QuickSmart Literacy celebrates NAIDOC Week

For NAIDOC Week students in QuickSmart have been learning about the Massacre at Myall Creek.
Jason spoke to us about Myall Creek and told us about the massacres that happened to Aboriginal people. Jason told us stories, maps and showed us pictures. It was interesting that we learned more from Jason than reading the text. I think it would be great to learn more about Indigenous culture.
The Massacre at Myall Creek is important because this is the first ever time that Europeans were punished for killing Aboriginal people. The massacre happened near Bingara on June 10, 1838, when 28 Aboriginal women, children and Elders from the Weraerai tribe were killed. This event is only one example of massacres of Aboriginal people.
Every year on the June long weekend there is a remembrance ceremony at the Myall Creek memorial. We remember what happened, learn about our past and work towards Reconciliation.
