The teaching profession often attracts a wide range of views ranging from positive and admiring to adverse criticism. During the Coronavirus period this year the views of many in the community who would normally have defaulted towards teacher criticism were challenged when students had to be educated at home. Many adults all over the world gained a positive perspective of teaching, for many one they hadn’t previously experienced. Insights were made and awareness raised of the demands which  teachers deal with daily.

World Teachers Day was celebrated several weeks ago. The annual event was established by UNESCO in the early 1990’s to recognise the vital role played by educators in our society.

In a year like no other it's never been more important to recognise the outstanding work of teachers and school support staff. The challenges in ensuring students could engage in quality education during the pandemic showed flexibility, creativity and dedication by staff. The Kildare team rose to the occasion during this period.

It's indeed appropriate that the theme of this year’s World Teacher’s Day was “Teachers Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future.” For those in the teaching profession and those who observe their work  it is well acknowledged that while teaching is a privileged profession there are increasingly more demands being placed on teachers that go beyond the core responsibilities of teaching and learning and creating all round good people ready to succeed in the future. While coronavirus has been a crisis experience this year teachers on a daily basis are confronted with added tasks that go beyond their central remit. Such is our world and such is the ever changing nature of their role.

My sense of the Kildare staff is that they do the teaching profession proud. Their dedication to the students through the provision of a solid Catholic education helps shape our students for the future spiritually,  academically and personally. Their dedication to the College and our students is worthy of acknowledgement and appreciation. On your behalf I pay tribute to the staff of Kildare and thank them sincerely for their work. They certainly epitomise the values which World Teachers Day promotes.
