"Bayside Christian College Wants You(r instruments)!"
Do you happen to have any spare musical instruments lying around your home gathering dust, not going to be used again? We are looking to expand our instrumental music program next year, and are planning to start hiring instruments out to students. If you have any unused instruments that could be donated to the cause (in any condition), we would be most grateful!
Please send any instruments to the main reception, or email david.mallen@baysidecc.vic.edu.au to arrange for collection of larger instruments.
Thank you in advance!!

Family Career Education Activity - recommended summer holiday viewing: "Back in Time for Dinner" (ABC)
During lockdown 2.0 I finally watched the ABC series 'Back in Time for Dinner' with my two Primary-aged kids. I'm not usually a fan of reality TV shows, however, this 12-part series presents a really fascinating and relevant exploration of the world of work across more than a century.
While many of us still think about 'paid jobs' when asked about work, the reality is that over a lifetime our career will comprise a range of roles - paid and unpaid - including caring for others (e.g. children, ageing parents), countless hours of domestic work in the home, and perhaps also volunteering in the community.
This series shows a family learning about the ways these roles have been 'juggled' in a typical Australian home, and the significant changes, through recent decades.
The Australian Blueprint for Career Development (ABCD) lists 11 Career Development competencies, one of which is for students to "understand the changing nature of life and work roles". As much as this series has a strong focus on what is being served for dinner (and who it is that actually cooks!), other important threads explore roles within the home, various time-saving devices that have made household chores less onerous, who gets to engage in paid work, our increasing use of technology, views on diet and nutrition, thrift, convenience, military service and fashion.
The show, which spans the 1950s to the future in Series 1 and the 1900s to 1940s in Series 2, also provides great mental scaffolding for children beginning to explore Australian history. It reinforces very poignantly our tremendous place of material privilege within the span of human history. The family members in the show are all endearing in their own way, and the inclusion of young 'Olivia' helps younger children to connect with some fairly sophisticated concepts at a more personal level. Annabel Crabb performs her lead role wonderfully too, and there are some iconic Aussies who drop in to visit!
Episodes are currently available for free via ABC iView. Given some of the difficult topics that are addressed (including the mistreatment of Australia's first peoples, and the impacts of various wars), parental guidance is recommended for younger children. I heartily recommend this excellent conversation starter as family viewing this summer!
