Student Leadership

Mentone Girls’ Secondary College educates students to achieve their highest potential, so they become self-directed, confident and skilled as they take their places in society. The College aims to be an exemplary provider of leadership opportunities for all students, ensuring that they become well-balanced and resilient young adults capable of sustaining strong and supportive relationships in a changing world, and contributing to society’s general well-being. The College values Resilience, Respect and Personal Best.

The student leadership program reflects the need for all students to develop leadership skills and have opportunity to put these into practice.

Late last term, the process for applying for student leadership positions for 2021 was shared with students currently in Year 8 to 11. All families should have also received an email which included links to application forms. This year there are just a few changes which should both streamline the process with only three forms covering all positions and also offering an increased number of positions to students in all year levels.

Each of the six teams have four positions available at each year level and then one additional Year 12 position as the Captain of that team. The four Year 12 positions in Performing Arts and Sport (House) are the eight House Leader positions as always.

Students interested in Domain leadership would apply for a place in the Student Voice and Advocacy team. These roles are focusing on the development of stronger partnerships between students and teachers in all Domains, in the development students contributing to the development of teaching and learning programs. The Environment and Sustainability team is a recently established group with renewed enthusiasm for raising awareness of these important issues. It will be looking at our carbon footprint and improving recycling and reducing consumption.

With student representation at each year level, the intention is that teams will break into sub-teams to focus on particular goals. For example Performing Arts will have sub-teams of Music, Dance, Drama. Student Voice and Advocacy will have particular Domains goals or year level for curriculum matters. House will have sports events sub-team.
