Reflection on six years in the Science labs

Transitioning into high school was such an exciting time. Something I always looked forward to when beginning in Year 7 were the Science experiments. My first ever Science experiment was in February, 2015. At only 12 years of age, the excitement of putting on a lab coat and goggles, tying my hair back and using beakers and bunsen burners made Science the most entertaining subject.

Over my six year at Mentone Girls’ I have been exposed me to a range of practical investigations and experiments from testing pH levels, dissecting brains, denaturing enzymes and more which I have found most helpful in being able to apply my knowledge that consolidates the theory we learn in class in depth.

Year 12

My love for science has only grown and has encouraged me to involve myself in programs outside of school. In January this year I attended the National Youth Science Forum. I am currently in training to return for the January 2021 program as a staff member guiding students about to enter Year 12 in their passion for science.

This week I completed my last ever science experiment, now that we have returned to school. Being something that was initially compromised due to COVID I am so grateful that I was able to participate in the first ever Gel Electrophorus Run at Mentone Girls’ Secondary College. In my Year 12 studies I have found practical investigations most useful to properly understand the content we learn in class to assist me for my SACs and examinations. I consider myself to be extremely lucky to be working with the biology teachers and other science teachers in the past five years of my education at MGSC as these practical experiments have inspired me to continue a pathway in science.

Sarah Liu created a charming comic strip depicting the fertility process.  Here is a detail of the beautiful graphics Sarah created.

Food Studies

Food Studies is a popular technology subject. Over 30 students in two classes are completing Unit 3 & 4 this year. At the end of term 3, teacher Tess Molina invited students to dress-up, put on their best formal attire and join online to celebrate their achievements in remote learning.
