What's happening in the Junior classrooms

The Junior School has been engaging in a variety of learning topics. As we begin preparing for Advent, the students have been reflecting on all the things for which we are grateful. We have been focussing on wellbeing, showing our HEART values and collaborating in our learning, at the same time as exploring concepts of “waiting for Christ” and “expectation” in Religious Education.

The Year 1/2s have been exploring the wonderful world of poetry through the books of Dr Seuss. They have been focussing on the reading comprehension strategy “visualising”, which means “making a mental image while reading”. The students have drawn their own versions of scenes from “The Lorax”, using clues from the written text. They have also been drawing scenes from other Seuss stories such as “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and identifying the rhyming words.

In Mathematics, the Year 1/2s explored capacity. They used unifix blocks to find the total amounts that different containers could hold. Students learned that units of measurement need to be the same size and there needs to be no gaps in-between them. This led us into our exploration of multiplication, as we looked at the arrays we had created to help us count more efficiently. The students have continued practising skip counting by 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s.

In Inquiry, the Junior School is moving into the Generating Phase of the Inquiry Cycle. They have chosen a focus area for our topic “Wellbeing”: either “Spiritual”, “Physical” or “Social/Emotional”. The students are preparing their final piece, which will be a way of sharing their learning with others. We look forward to seeing their creations.
