Understanding the Maths Learner

Transitioning Maths Knowledge

As the end of the school year looms closer, students are preparing and transitioning into the next year level above. This includes students going to Secondary School and Kindergarten students transitioning into Foundation.

There are many ways parents and teachers can support the transition process, especially in maths. The two main processes to support students towards new and different content knowledge are; keep curious and growth mindset.

Keep Curious

Keep curious is about opening the mind and imagination to creativity and thinking differently. Thinking outside the box invites curiosity and in mathematics, this is a great skill to have. Deep thinkers see connections to other concepts and their own experiences. Curiosity also allows learning to never seem boring. Curiosity looks for creativity and connection and this is how learning becomes engaging and sustainable.

Curiosity is the first step in learning. This is the basis for foundational maths in school. Keeping curious about all things maths is how we begin to teach the basic concepts of making sense of number. Curiosity is the natural progression of wanting to learn, without fear. Students that keep curious about maths have no fear in making mistakes or taking risks.

Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset in maths is essential to learning without fear. The fear is within a fixed mindset. Over time and through experiences we develop a fixed mindset especially in maths. This fixed mindset can also be passed on to our children through how we behave and what we say about maths. This is heightened during the transition into High School. Students are told that they need to prepare for harder work than what they get in primary school especially in maths. Studies have shown, that students should be preparing for the way things are done, organisational skills and resilient attitudes rather than content level and a growth mindset was high on the priority of transitioning maths knowledge into High School. Thank goodness CSPS has Mathematical Mindsets (growth mindset) as an overarching philosophy in how we teach maths.

Fabulous Maths Lessons

During "Step Through" our in-school transition program that prepares students for the next level, we engaged our students in the wonder of maths. The 2020 Year 3's experienced Year 4 maths exploring geometrical multiplication. The 2020 Year 1's experienced Year 2 number sense.
