Kitchen Garden

Grade 3/4H September 2nd

Another productive day in the garden.

Activities

  • Feeding the worms shredded leaves from the broccoli plants and shredded news paper.
  • Harvesting produce from the garden for everyone to take home and share with their families; broccoli, bok choy, potatoes, carrots and cauliflower.
  • Digging and weeding part of the wall garden and adding broken down mulch and compost in preparation for spring/summer crops.
  • Planting peas in punnets for everyone to take home and plant in their own gardens.
  • Making compost seed balls with peony poppy seeds to throw into a garden at school or home.

Thank you to Peta, Colleen, Barnaby, Leanne and Allesha for helping. The more help we have the more we achieve during the hour sessions in the garden.

Grade 3/4H September 7th

The weather was perfect for an afternoon working in the garden, we even spotted some lady beetles amongst the plants.

Activities:

  • Cutting leaves from spent plants and shredding paper to begin adding layers to a new garden bed which will be used for insect attracting flowers. The garden bed is an up cycled fish pond which Jimmy has repurposed for us.
  • Weeding the onion garden beds and topping up with a thin layer of pea straw to stop the garden beds drying out as the weather warms up.
  • Twirling and turning the compost bins and shredding newspaper to go into the compost bins.
  • Liquid fertilising all the plants with Seasol.
  • Digging up surprise potatoes from the art room garden bed and weeding it in preparation for spring/summer crops of pumpkin. A mix of alpaca poo, coffee grounds and blood and bone was added, too.
  • Picking and washing carrots to eat as a snack while we reflected on the session.

Thanks to our wonderful helpers Peta, Colleen, Matt and Allesha. It has been great to see new faces help out in the garden each week.

WINNER WINNER

Congratulations to our very own Lilly Biscoe whose potato head creation was announced as one of the winners in SAKGF competition that we participated in as part of the Kitchen Garden program.

She won a cook book, an adults and child’s apron and a $100 Coles gift card.

Well done Lilly!
