Year 8 News

Hi everyone

Our Year 8 cohort is working well in preparation for the current CAT weeks.  We’ve had the highest number of students receiving LBU and Attendance Awards in the last cycles, for this year, to date.  Well done to those students!  They enjoyed a reward lunch last week.

Tech School Excursion

On 19th August, 45 Year 8 students attended a Tech School Excursion in Morwell. Throughout the day, students learned about various skills on how the world of work is changing and the skills that will be most important for them as they move into the workforce in near future. Students rotated into between different activities which exposed them to industry-changing technologies and new ways of problem-solving.

The sessions addressed how the world is evolving with new technologies and how they could be sometimes disruptive and why it matters. Students excitedly watched the video on the current new technologies available around the world. We were impressed with students asking critical questions about the impacts of developing technologies. Students were amazed by how drones took over agriculture and how the technology is helping to manage crops' growth. This short session allowed students to think about how different industries are being changed by technologies and why it will matter to their future careers.

Students were also taught how to use online software to code robots to make them security guards for a factory. Students worked on this project by actively listening for instructions. Watching the results of their coding created self-fulfillment. Next, students used an app on the supplied iPads to create logos for their friends and learned how these logos can be printed through a laser cutting tool. Many logos were printed using small pieces of wood. This activity helped the students to understand how the technology is easing the work of manufacturing.

Finally, students were given an amazing experience with a Virtual Reality activity.  Students used a VR headset and worked in teams to perform tasks and enjoy experiences such as dancing, riding on a roller coaster, drawing and art in VR, a mission on a space station, defusing a bomb  and more. When the activities were finished, it was evident on students’ faces how enthusiastic they were and how well they enjoyed these activities.

An enjoyable day was had by all, and our students represented our college well.  Thank you to staff who supported our students on the day!

Students have studied Biology in Science this term.  The last couple of groups have recently finished their chicken wing dissection to study the muscular skeletal system of the arm.

Class Snapshot - Health

Students have studied First Aid this term. They’ve been able to apply the required response in an emergency situation.  Well done to our Health team.  We’re all feeling a little safer!

Student Laptops

A reminder that students are expected to bring a charged laptop to all classes. Could parents and guardians please check that their child is taking their charged laptop to school with a charger.  This would assist with trying to develop good organisational habits.
