Leadership

Much has been happening in 2022, as we’ve officially had three full terms of school since lock-downs - they are now a distant memory! There is a lot more energy at Macleod, with lunchtime activities such as Just Dance, board games, DND Club, Rainbow Group, and more. Our resident furry friends Peggy and Charlie have also kept us company!

This term, we had our first food drive, where our Macleod College community donated over 500 items to the Macleod Community Pantry. We are very proud of our efforts, and hope that we were able to help our extended community through difficult times. We will continue this food drive every year, as it has allowed us to connect with our immediate community! We’d like to thank everyone who has contributed - a small contribution from all of us can make a big difference in our community! The class with the most donations received a pizza party - congratulations to P1/P2 from our Primary Campus, and 7A from the Secondary Campus.

If you would like to donate to the Macleod Community Pantry, please contact Paul Rudd via Facebook (search #macleodcommunitypantry).

Student Voice

The Student Leadership Team have been part of interviewing applicants for our Leading Teacher roles. It has been a great experience to be able to collaborate and work with the staff at Macleod. As students, we feel that our voice matters too, as we are part of the Macleod College community. We have also been part of workshops with staff, where we analysed student opinion survey data. This is a positive step forward, where we can work with the Macleod College staff about what changes are best for the whole school.

We’ve had some major successes with student voice, where the Student Representative Council (SRC) tackled the uniform policies. The SRC surveyed students, staff and parents regarding the uniform policy, and took the results back to Mr. Arney and Ms. Wallis. The surveys provided insight into how the uniform policies affected students, teachers/PE classes and families. Thanks to our Leadership Team at Macleod for listening to us, as we now have flexible uniform, and are able to wear our sports uniform on days we have scheduled PE lessons. We implore all students to please be aware of the uniform policies now in place, as we’ve worked hard to have these changes made for the benefit of everyone.

As Term 3 drew to a close, we celebrated with Wear It Purple day, organised by Rainbow Group. Students were encouraged to wear a splash of purple with their uniform to in support of our LGBTQI+ community. Student Leaders had a purple nail polish station for their peers. Additionally, VCAL students sold pronoun badges as part of their Personal Development project. The funds were donated to Minus 18, an organisation dedicated to improve health and wellbeing, and provide a safe environment for gender diverse young people.

On 1 September, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Harry Potter with students dressed up in house colours and enjoying a snack at the Honey Dukes bake sale. The quidditch matches were the most exciting part of the day for both students and teachers. As students played to make memories and others cheered in excitement, we demonstrated our value of connect. Congratulations to our winners, Slytherin and the teachers team! The celebrations didn’t end on the day, as we also had the Harry Potter movie night on 9 September, where families gathered to enjoy snacks and the first Harry Potter movie together!

We ended the term by celebrating R U OK? Day where students were able to create friendship bracelets which were run by the Wellbeing Leaders. This year's theme was “Ask the question, no qualifications needed.” The friendship bracelets are a reminder to check in with your friends, loved ones, teacher, and yourself.

As the 2022 Student Leadership Team comes to an end, applications for 2023 Student Leadership will be released at the start of Term 4. I would highly recommend that students apply, as there are many roles you can join in which you can help better our school community. I can promise you, on behalf of the 2022 Student Leadership Team, it's a choice that we are proud that we made to be part of this team. It’s helped us improve as individuals and as a collective. I look forward to seeing many of you apply and can’t wait to see what you are able to offer for 2023.

I wish you all the best and enjoy your holidays!!!
