A New Chapter

Celebrating Book Week

STORIES FROM THE LIBRARY

In library lessons this term we have enjoyed reading and discussing a wide range of excellent shortlisted Book of the Year titles. We have also debated and voted on our favourites.

Walk of the Whales encouraged us to learn more about whales, plastic waste and caring for the ocean. We also explored our creative side by making our own moving whales. Reading Stellarphant inspired us to learn more about space. Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief encouraged older students to read and enjoy historical fiction, and to learn more about World War II. Jetty Jumping allowed younger students to recall the joys of swimming at the beach on a warm summer day – even during a cold Tasmanian winter. The Boy Who Tried to Shrink His Name inspired us to celebrate cultural heritage and explore the geography and food of India.

Non-fiction books have been particularly popular. The Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Peculiar Pairs in NatureIceberg and Great White Shark motivated students to explore the natural world. We examined some real-life examples, including empty shark egg cases from Seven Mile Beach and shark teeth fossils. Magnifying the shark eggs cases on a screen enabled us to identify and research what type of shark each egg belonged to.

The world of books is an exciting journey and we look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you.
