Grades 3, 4, 5 and Grade 6 classes have been extremely busy this month, venturing out on fascinating excursions and whipping up some very clever science experiments and much more!
Grade 3/4 Blackwood & Myrtle on Excursion
To coincide with our Church unit of work in Religion, Grade 3/4 Blackwood and Myrtle took part in a Church excursion.
We were lucky to be able to visit Corpus Christi, Church of the Incarnation and St John's Catholic Church; as well as enjoying the day with a few park plays along the way.
We had the pleasure of inviting Rachelle Smith to join us. She works within our Bellerive-Lindisfarne parish and was able to provide us with answers to our many questions about Corpus Christi church and Church of the Incarnation; as well as a wonderful surprise guest appearance from Fr Terry at St John's Catholic Church, who was also keen to share with us some detailed facts and knowledge of the historic and sacred space.
Although it was a wet and rainy day, all the students made the most of the experience
with no complaints, and thoroughly deserved and enjoyed the sweet treat at the end of a big day!
The Festival of Bright Ideas
On Friday, 19 August 3/4 Blackwood and Myrtle went on an excursion to Princes Wharf in Salamanca Place. They attended The Festival of Bright Ideas, a special event held each year to celebrate National Science Week.
The festival involved a stage show that taught us about microbes and the positive and negative impacts that these tiny organisms have on our lives. We then moved into groups to make our way around the interactive activities, hosted by scientists from various colleges and the University of Tasmania. There were even scientists that taught us all about the physical sciences (physics) through a circus performance!
We had a great time, got a few fabulous take-aways and learned so many things about Science and our wonderful world.
At the Festival of bright ideas I enjoyed looking at krill at the Antarctica stall. We also got to see lots of farm animals and hold stick insects. I enjoyed the challenge of doing different puzzles.- Thomas.J
On Friday the 19 of August Grade 3 and 4 went to a park named Princes park. The park was fun and exciting. We played on a boat. After that we walked down to the Festival of Bright Ideas. - Aavnish
The Festival of Bright Ideas excursion was good because we got to play at the park and have lunch. After that we went to the Festival of Bright Ideas. I enjoyed playing with the science toys and looking at the krill. We also watched a cool science presentation.
- Mason
We took a bus into town to go to the Festival of Bright Ideas. I really enjoyed getting to see new things and learning a bit more about Science. We got to play with lots of science toys. - Millie.

Grade 5/6 Huon and Sassafras
Huon and Sassafras have been doing some experiments as part of our Reversible and Irreversible Change Unit in Science. We have learnt about mixtures and how some mixtures are solutions. We have mixed ingredients together to see whether a chemical reaction takes place. We have learnt that a chemical reaction has four main indicators: light is released, gases are released, it makes a smell, or heat is taken in or produced.

Grade 6 Netball and Football Representatives
As a result of our participation in the Term 3 STCPSSA sports roster, four of our Grade 6 students will be representing JPII School at the upcoming Clark V Franklin netball and football games. We would like to congratulate Lilly Upton and Robbiel Reyes who will be representing us on the netball court and Liam Headlam and Tom Scott on the football field. All four students took part in a training session on the afternoon of 7 September and will be participating in their respective sports on Wednesday the 14 September at Dominic College. We are confident that these students will represent our school with pride and make the most of this fantastic opportunity.
