Working Parts Gallery

On the18th of August we officially opened our Thornbury x Leadbeater exhibition, presented to you by the Working Parts Committee.

On the 23rd of May, Melbourne artist and graphic designer Steve Leadbeater visited Thornbury High School, running a workshop where students created a range of artworks inspired by his unique style.

Leadbeater’s style is reminiscent of the neo-expressionist movement, featuring abstract and intuitive imagery and words, and an unrestricted approach to depiction. Leadbeater describes his work as “driven by contrast”, exploring juxtapositions like “identity and anonymity, sensitivity and brutality, spirit and form”.

This exhibition intends to display the great variety of art which was created by Thornbury High School students during this workshop. These works display a meeting of the individual artist’s unique styles with Leadbeater’s distinctive approaches to art and representation, such as using ‘three word prompts’ to generate ideas and taking an impulsive approach to using materials. This exhibition demonstrates how students explored this different style of creativity and art through their own individual lens.
