Student Leadership

Over the past two months the Student Leadership Teams have been hard at work creating opportunities for students to get involved at Thornbury High. With events running for NAIDOC Week, the release of the second issue of the Student Newsletter, and a Staff vs Student Netball game, there’s been a buzz of activity at the school.

This week the Student Leadership Team welcomed our 2022 Year 11 Leadership Program Mentees to the student leadership committees. Our successful candidates; Alice Conroy, Anhkhoa Nguyen, Natasha Petrevski, Ruby Elliott, Sally Ngo and Scarlett Branigan have already demonstrated their enthusiasm for the program, attending leadership meetings, facilitating lunchtime activities, and working closely with the School Captains to develop their goals for the program.

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 11 Leadership Mentees for their positive approach to the role so far. We look forward to collaborating with our new student leaders over the coming weeks as the Student Leadership Team delivers competitions and activities for Book Week, Footy Day, and RUOK? Day.

NAIDOC Week

Thornbury High School celebrated NAIDOC week from the 18th to 22nd of July. Over the week the Student Leadership teams organised a range of activities. On Tuesday several students were lucky enough to physically reconnect with the land by collecting soil samples from key locations at the school, sending them to Macquarie University to be analysed. This will help determine which parts of the school are most suitable to plant new native trees, flowers or shrubs. On Wednesday and Thursday students were invited to watch the extraordinary documentary ‘Freeman’ which follows the inspirational life and career of Cathy Freeman. Finally, on Friday the Student Leadership ran the ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’ 2022 NAIDOC posters colouring in competition. Overall, the week was a great success. Students were able to reflect on the culture of Australia’s Indigenous people while actively participating in the school community.

Student Newsletter - Issue No.2

Since the release of the first issue of the Student Newsletter, the Student Leadership team has continued to research and gain bucket loads of resources for students. After collecting student and staff feedback on the first issue, we tried to make the newsletter more accessible to students, and include a wider range of engaging resources including; more content written by students, and a number of puzzles and entertainment pieces.
