2022 Cultural Diversity Celebration, Term 4, Week 2

Melton Secondary College has a long standing tradition in celebrating Cultural Diversity Week. Students are offered a unique experience in embracing their cultural identity and heritage, and our diverse community.

The Cultural Diversity Week is a unique platform to empower students, especially during the  assembly where dignitaries, guests and partner organisations are warmly invited to attend or contribute inspiring messages of encouragement to the students.

The event continues to enrich student and staff experience and a greater understanding into the matters of inclusion and diversity while strengthening intercultural relations and connections amongst peers at the school and in the community. These approaches are aligned with our College’s STARR Values which stands for Success, Teamwork, Ambition, Respect, and Responsibility, guiding students with important personal attributes in preparing them for the brighter future.

The past few years have been extremely challenging with the global Covid19 pandemic, This year we are looking forward to celebrating our guests and dignitaries in person. We have invited The Victorian Multicultural Commissioner, Ms. Vivienne Nguyen; Melton Mayor Goran Kesic; Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner, Mr Andrew Crisp; Local Member of Melton Hon Steve McGhie; Indigenous Elders for the Welcome to the Country; and community organisations that work closely with our school.

Melbourne Victory Football Club

Students have welcomed their new replacement coach, Harley Hamdani. Students are very familiar with him due to his involvement managing the school holiday program with Teo Theodoridis who is taking a leave until Term 4, 2022.  We thank Teo for the wonderful connection he has continued to form with the students .

Melbourne Victory has a long standing partnership with Melton Secondary College for many years delivering lunch, recess and afterschool soccer clinics to our students every Wednesday. Melbourne Victory FC are also a great contributors in running workshops at our Cultural Diversity Week celebration, especially linking sport with culture.  Harley’s first day onsite with the students was well received by the students with both juniors and seniors.

Other activities that remain popular with the students are: Video Games Club, UNO, Chess, Dominoes, and the Morning Basketball Program.

Student clubs also run on Wednesdays after school. The space provides students with peer leadership, wellbeing enhancement, and social space to connect more positively.  The club also offers students a chance to practice their cultural dance for the Cultural Diversity Week celebration.

Movie night was a huge success. Students enjoyed a viewing of “The Sea Beast” on 24 August. Pizzas, drinks, and popcorn were well received.
