Rubbish Rebel Waste

Term 3 of Environmental Science

What an exciting finish to our term on Biodiversity! Year 4’s learning about endangered and threatened species for National Threatened Species Day on September 7th.

Foundation students have been drawing pictures of our resident duck family, mumma duck has laid eggs in our Junior playground and the duck family is often seen waddling around our yard foraging for worms and food at recess and lunchtime. The duck is a Pacific Black Duck which is a native Australian duck. Pacific Black Ducks are often found in pairs and will lay up to 24 eggs over the year. We have seen 4 eggs so far and they are expected to hatch over the school holidays.

Our Grade 1 and 2 students have been exploring habitats and acting out habitat loss from the animals point of view, it has been wonderful to see all students engage with this task and get to know a variety of animal habitats.

TYAMA Exhibition at Melbourne Museum

Recently Mrs Rooke and I visited Melbourne Museum's TYAMA exhibit. TYAMA is an audio visual journey of connection to Country and is an incredible experience for the whole family. You can learn about animals' role in storytelling and how humans work with the animals to protect our earth. If you are looking for something to do on the school holidays this is definitely worth a visit. We loved it! Miss Dunstan.

MUSHROOMS -

The Grade 3 students have been so excited to harvest and cook with their mushrooms. Some students have chosen to bring some mushrooms home while others have enjoyed cooking with them at school instead. The Grade 3 students have also prepared a mushroom cookbook which will be sent home electronically next term.

Oral care collection

Our school has signed up for the Terracycle/ Colgate Community Garden challenge. We need your used oral care packaging to earn us votes, the more product packages we collect the more votes we earn, the better our chances of winning a community garden! It’s easy to get involved, simply bring ANY BRAND completed oral care products (image below) and we will collect them and send them away for recycling. LAST WEEK FOR ORAL CARE COLLECTION.

Tablet blister pack collection

Our school is continuing to add solutions to waste in our community. We have recently purchased a Terracycle recycling bin to collect tablet blister packs to be sent away for recycling. If you have any tablet blister packs at your home you can send them to school with your child and they can drop them into the Enviro room collection box. NO MEDICATION IS TO BE LEFT IN THE BLISTER PACKS.

This project is funded by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Climate Action Grant.

Single use coffee cups - Recycle them at SPS

SPS has teamed up with 7Eleven and Simply Cups to help stop 1 billion coffee cups ending up in landfill each year.

You can bring your single use coffee cups to our pod collection units at the front office and outside the staff room where we will send them back to 7 Eleven to recycle. So far, used cups have been turned into outdoor furniture, garden beds, reusable cups and most recently, a road! Watch what happens to them here:
