Y9/10 Japanese

Online Exchange with Noboribetsu Akebi High School

On Tuesday and Friday last week, Year 9 and 10 Japanese classes participated in the first online exchange with Noboribetsu Akebi High School students. Our students presented about our school, Melbourne and Victoria in Japanese. This was followed by the Noboribetsu Akebi High School students teaching us about their school and lifestyle in English.

We also had a Q&A (‘Shitsumon Ko-na-’) where students from each country asked each other questions about school and everyday life in their target language.

Students from both schools thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and the chance to communicate with each other, as well as share their cultures!

“This was an enriching experience that showcased our language skills and allowed us to develop cultural relationships”

Pen Pal Program

Ritsumeikan Keisho Senior High School Students

For the purpose of building cross-cultural educational relationships with Ritsumeikan Keisho High School students in Hokkaido, Japan, and also aiming to improve Japanese writing skills, the students in our Year 10 Japanese class started the Pen Pal program in June and we have received replies from Japanese students!

The benefits of Pen Pal relationships offer a number of significant benefits such as:

  • Increased awareness of Japanese society and culture.
  • Aids language acquisition through communicating with native Japanese high school students.
  • Honing Japanese reading, writing and questioning skills.
  • Supporting development of social skills by fostering friendships through sharing interests, ideas and life accomplishments.

I found this letter task very exciting and beneficial. Me and my Pen Pal, Haruna, discussed details such as our hobbies, family, school, and things we each recommend if we ever visit. Not only did we find things in common, but I also greatly improved my Japanese writing ability! This opportunity really broadened my global knowledge and understanding of Japanese culture. Overall, I found this letter-writing experience to be a fantastic opportunity to connect with Japanese students and improve my language skills.
