Mr Tom Tahos

Message from the

Director of  Learning -

Mr Tom Tahos

As we approach the end of Term 3, we would like to pass on a massive congratulations to everyone.

Take the time over these holidays to recharge your batteries. Look after yourselves, keep healthy and active, stay safe, eat well, maintain good sleeping habits, and keep hydrated.

When we return, continue with the following:

  1. Focus on learning, bring the correct equipment to class, get involved in learning tasks and complete classwork and homework.
  2. Attend school and get to all classes on time.
  3. Wear the correct school uniform which will be SUMMER UNIFORM for Term 4.
  4. Smile and enjoy yourselves. 😊

CYBER-SAFETY REMINDER -

KEEPING SAFE ONLINE

We want all our Years 9 and 10 students to be aware of and safely be part of all the wonderful opportunities the world wide web and the various interactive environments available have to offer. With this comes the need to be aware of some of the DANGERS that these can present.

We have a right to be and feel safe in any environment this includes the cyber world.

We also have a responsibility to make others feel safe.

Remember these key messages/tips:

  • If anything happens that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe- take a screenshot and let your parent/guardian or teacher know.
  • Everyone needs to be aware that any bullying and abuse over the internet can become a police matter.
  • Do not share passwords, pictures or other personal details like your location or phone numbers.
  • Be kind!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS KIM PHUNG

On behalf of all past and present members of the Westall Secondary College community, we would like to acknowledge and congratulate

Kim Phung for receiving her 35 Years’ Service Award with the Victorian Department of Education.

Congratulations Kim!!

Miss Phung has worked in various roles over her journey here at Westall, supporting all students and staff from year 7 to year 12.  Her latest role is an Education Support team member for the middle years sub-school. Kim’s support has been invaluable and without her efforts, many major projects, as well as the day-to-day tasks, would be very challenging to complete.

Thank you, Kim and congratulations on this wonderful milestone.

Year 10 Global Literacy Excursion – Melbourne Holocaust Museum

On the 13th and 14th of July, the Year 10 cohort had the privilege and eye-opening experience of visiting the Melbourne Holocaust Museum and meeting a survivor.

Following our studies of World War II and the Holocaust in Global Literacy, and having only heard the stories from our textbooks, meeting Charles German, a survivor originally from Romania, was incredibly moving. It made us understand the true extent of the atrocities of the Holocaust. The second group of Year 10s met John Lamovie, a survivor originally from France.

I can say on behalf of my whole cohort that this was one of the most memorable and impactful excursions thus far.

Year 9 Global Literacy Excursion – Shrine of Remembrance

Year 9 students have been studying the First World War throughout Term 3 in their Global Literacy classes. Students have explored the causes of war, the motivations of soldiers and nurses in enlisting, and the nature of trench warfare. In order to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the experiences of ANZAC soldiers and nurses, the students visited the Shrine of Remembrance on the 18th of August.

Prior to entering the Shrine, the Year 9s participated in an Amazing Race challenge through the surrounding gardens, encountering many monuments dedicated to those who served in the First World War. The 18th of August is also Vietnam Veteran’s Day, so students had the privilege of watching the commemorative service at the foot of the Shrine. Once in the Shrine, students were guided through the underground museum where they learnt about significant people and battles and encountered numerous historical artefacts which further enriched their study of this tragic period of history.
