Week 1 Term 4

Detail of Stations of a Cross image

- Mother and Son

- by Dr Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann.

Jesus saw His mother and the disciple

He loved standing there; so He said to His mother,

“Here is your son”

John 19:26

“An Aboriginal mother can only comfort a grown-up son in sorrow by touching him with her hand, but once he has died, she can take his body into her arms for the last time. Mary’s body and her son’s merge together into one.  The tear in Mary’s head and on her hand symbolises her sorrow, straight lines radiate out from the tear as a sign of her new life from her dead son” (Fr Martin Wilson MSC)

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Term Four. It is hard to believe we are on the year's home stretch. I am extremely excited to be back at work and am looking forward to the many Learning and Teaching opportunities we have planned for the students this term.

After my return from Long Service Leave, I was fortunate to have experienced an Indigenous Cultural Immersion Tour with 29 other Principal Colleagues in Darwin. During the week, we had many opportunities to deepen our knowledge, understanding and appreciation of indigenous people.

One such experience was visiting St Francis Xavier Primary School in Daly River where Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann lives. Unfortunately for us, Miriam was unable to speak to us as she was invited to the Queen's funeral however,  we were fortunate to visit her beloved St Francis Xavier Church at Daly River where her acclaimed series of paintings  Australian Stations of the Cross are on display.

Miriam has had a profound impact on her community at Nauiyu (Daly River) and beyond through her work as an educator, school Principal, writer and active community and church member. As a painter, she has striven to reconcile her Christian beliefs with her indigenous spirituality.

I look forward to sharing my learnings with the staff and students and designing learning opportunities and embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education across the curriculum.

CIRCUS PERFORMANCE -OCTOBER 20TH 7PM

I am excited to finally announce that we will be holding our first Whole School Circus Performance.

As you may or may not be aware, The Circus Crew have delivered their Circus Program at St Fidelis over the past 8 weeks on a weekly one hour lesson with each class. Over that time, the students have participated in activities including juggling, floor displays and balance routines. The students have enjoyed joining in with these sessions and the teachers have noticed an increase in the student's confidence, concentration, teamwork and coordination.

On Thursday, October 20th, all the students will be expected to participate in the Whole School Circus Performance. The Performance will take place in our School Hall. We are hiring a professional company to set up a stage, backdrop, microphones, lighting etc…

Our hall has a capacity to seat 350 people which means we are not able to have extended family attend. Each family will be allocated 2 tickets (SIBLINGS FREE) at $15.00 each and can be purchased at the school office from Monday 10th October.

We have explored other venues but the cost of buses, venue hire etc. was not feasible for such a small performance.

To assist other family members to have an opportunity to watch their nieces, nephews, children or grandchildren we are offering a free viewing to any family members at our dress rehearsal on Thursday, October 20th at 12:00pm. (No booking or payment is required for this session). We hope that this option will enable other family members to enjoy the Circus Concert with their loved ones.

More details to follow regarding the time the students will be required to be at school on Thursday night. A note to all parents that costumes will NOT be required to be supplied by families. Thank you for your understanding and we are looking forward to a wonderful night !!

BRUNSWICK MORELAND CATHOLIC MISSION Mission Survey

The Brunswick Moreland Catholic Mission, working collaboratively across three parish communities of Brunswick-Brunswick East (St Ambrose's and Our Lady Help of Christians), St Fidelis' and St Joseph's, is seeking your input into this survey to help us chart a way forward for seeking to respond to the call of Pope Francis to be a renewed pastoral community which is inclusive and open. The survey should take you between 5-8 minutes to complete and will provide us with invaluable information. Survey results will be fed back to all communities in the coming weeks as part of the Mission Review Project.
