Werribee Zoo Excursion

This term we have been learning about 'Living Things'. On Friday, Preps visited the open range zoo to learn more about habitats. We looked at lots of animals in their habitats and learnt that all animals need food, water, air and shelter to survive. The safari was a highlight where we saw giraffes, rhinos, ostrichs and much more. Thanks to all of our wonderful parent helpers for volunteering their time.

Grade 1

Maths:

Graphing and Data-

This week in numeracy grade one students have been learning about how to collect data and present what we learn from the data in the form of a graph. Students learnt how to collect data and that we do this as it helps us find out about the world. We use graphs to organise and display our collected data so that we can look at it easily and learn more.

Students enjoyed formulating survey questions, collecting the data using the tally mark system and then using their data to develop and draw up a graph.

Grade 2

Over the past two weeks the Grade 2s have been focusing on text features in nonfiction texts.  We have been learning that it is very important to read all the information on the page and that the text features are there to support what is written in the text.

Grade 3

Over the past two week the students in Grade 3 have been practising their reading fluency. They have been participating in Readers Theatre. Students have been using punctuation and reading with expression to perform their scripts to the class. As well as building their teamwork skills by working in small groups. It was a lot of fun!

Grade 4

This week the Grade 4s have been busy putting the finishing touches on their persuasive writing pieces, we started a focus on poetry in reading and finished off some assessments in maths. In a big week of assessing the students have shown tremendous persistence, self-belief and concentration!

The garden program will be wrapping up next week. To cap it all off we will have a celebration day on Tuesday morning, the morning before camp. The students will be making dips with produce from the garden. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to help out.  Additionally, as a Grade 4 team we would like to thank Deidre, Margaret, Leigh and Martin for lending their time, passionate and expertise throughout the year. They have created some fantastic lessons over the year and have passed their considerable wisdom onto our students. We look forward to working with them again next year!

Grade 5

Reading: Leadership

This week the grade 5’s have been looking into someone who shows leadership not necessarily  “ the boss “ or someone you look up to. We researched the character strengths they show, about their life, childhood and what they do to be or act as a leader. I picked Steph Curry. Not only is he a good player, he shows courage, teamwork and good sportsmanship. He congratulates every shot and every score. I think he is a brilliant leader.

This week in Year 5 we have started learning about leadership. We have been researching about leaders of our choice to find out the qualities and character strengths that make them a good leader. A leader doesn't have to be the captain of Geelong Cats, a leader can even be your mum or dad or even your dog! Anyone can be a leader. We have been researching people we look up to and finding out what they do to be a good leader. Leaders set paths and help themselves and others to do the right thing. This week I’ve been researching Jayson Tatum. I chose Tatum because I think he is a great leader for the Celtics and for fans too. No, he’s not the captain of the Celtics but he for sure has the qualities to be. 60 points isn’t an everyday thing for an NBA player.

By Liv

Luka Doncic is a great example of a leader. I have been researching him and I have found some very interesting facts such as he is from Slovenia and he also has been a NBA all star every year of his career. Doncic is a leader in his team and community.

By Harry

Another example is M.S Dhoni, an Indian cricketer. His greatest strength is being able to stay seemingly calm in stressful situations and keep an unclustered mind throughout difficulties. If everyone can relate this strength and show this at school maybe you might become the next M.S Dhoni. But it doesn’t have to be a sportsman, it can be a climate activist, a relative or even a brave pet that helped you push through hard times.

Year 5 buddy books

Lately in Year 5 we have been writing buddy books (aka books for our buddies.)

We write buddy books to give our buddy's something nice for their parents to read to them and something to remember us by when we leave primary school. I have written a book about mushroom people and Ollie has written a story about monster trucks. So many amazing creative stories have been made from goldfish to sports players. It's been great fun and has boosted our creativity.

Hi we’re Allison, Issy and Isla and we will be talking about the buddy books we have been making.

You may know the grade 5s have been writing picture story books for our prep buddies next year. We have been writing these books for our buddies to enjoy. Some of the things we have been focusing on are dialogue, introductions and using verbs to make our sentences more alive. Here are some front covers the grade 5 students have been working on.

Maths: Graphing

This week in Grade 5 math we have been working on data about the Commonwealth Games, like how geelong should spend its money, where to hold the events and if they should upgrade equipment and stadiums so that the games may go on safely. We used pie graphs, bar graphs, dot plots and much more. We then presented our findings to our class.

This week in class all the Year Fives did a world cup soccer team sweep where you pick out a team and follow their scores through the world cup. Next week we will be working with probability in the world cup. Tom is closely following Costa Rica who got smashed by Spain 7-0 and Baxter is following Ghana who lost to Portugal 2-3.

Recently the world cup 2022 has kicked off and the grade 5 cohort have organized a competition where each student and teacher have selected a team in a random draw. All participating pupils and teachers are tracking their  teams progress throughout the tournament.

Next week we will use this for maths in chance and probability. Some activities will be the chance of them winning given their recent form and results we will turn their win probability into fractions, decimals and percentages.

The Garden:

The last three weeks we have been in the garden learning how to grow tomatoes. In the first week we planted tomatoes in the school garden. We learnt about companion planting. Did you know that growing garlic or marigolds near a tomato plant helps a tomato grow? We also weeded an area of the garden where we found some weeds bigger than one of our arms!

On the second week we got tomates to take home, we all took good care of them. We were all so excited and we even got to plant our own tomatoes in a bigger pot and we put banana peel in our pots because it helps the tomatoes and the plant grow bigger! Some of us have already planted ours in our gardens. We also did weeding again in the garden at school! In the garden we found lots of different bugs such as snails, rolly pollys and even spiders.

We also got to make pollinator hotels for Australian Pollinator Week. These were made out of recycled coffee cups, sticks and bark. We then hung them in the trees.

Thank you so much Margaret, Diedre and Leigh for helping us learn so much about the garden!

In the past 3 weeks we have been in the garden. We mainly learnt about: how to grow tomatoes and we also learnt about different companion plants such as basil, marigolds and garlic. We have also been learning about caring for the tomatoes that we have taken back to our homes. Personally, I love having a tomato plant to take care of. We also pruned our tomatoes, did you know that cutting the middle stem helps it grow?

Last week was Australian Pollinator Week. We learnt all about pollinators and how they help plants grow. Australian Pollinator Week has a very catchy theme song!

Thank you to Margaret, Deirdre and Leigh for helping us in the garden!

Grade 6

Learning the skill of working independently in readiness for Year 7 and beyond:

Writing:

In Writing we are completing our 'All About Me' Slideshows in preparation for Graduation Posters. I'm liking that we can make it our own and we have choice in the task. It is up to us to use our time efficiently - Arrabella Amos, Yr 6.

Reading:  We are completing a text responce for our class text: Boy at the Back of The Class. We were engaged by this text, learning about refugees and being inclusive of different people and cultures. We're enjoying the freedom to answer questions of our choice and we also like that many of the questions are open ended - Eadie Clarke and Abbey Uytendaal, Yr 6.

Maths: We are working through questions we have been given to solve a murder/mystery (fake). I like this way of learning and figuring out chance and probability in a fun, enjoyable way - Mads , Yr 6.

Graduation: In preparation for our upcoming Graduation we have been working together to share and develop our ideas for the night. In Grade 6 it's not all just about the details, it's also about creating fun, enjoyable dances. The picture you see below is some of the designs that the grade 6's have worked on, the tickets are going to be  used for graduation and were chosen to be distributed to families - Charlie-May, Yr 6.

Leadership:

Junior School Council havebeen working towards a Sleepout to raise awareness and funds for our growing homeless population. The sleep out encourages the BHPS community to sleep out in a tent, or swag, or anything, to experience what homeless life might be like - Indigo and Phoebe , Yr 6 JSC.
