Year 7 Wellbeing Day

UNITE: Our Year 7 students tried their hand at pickleball in the Wurdi Baierr Stadium.

Surf Coast Secondary College are delighted to have  received a grant offered by the Surf Coast Shire during Mental Health Month for a project to promote good mental health during October.  The funding was used to purchase indoor pickleball nets and paddles.

Pickleball originated in U.S. the 1960s however made a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic and is fast growing sport.  Pickleball is a mish-mash utilising a larger table tennis paddle over a tennis-sized net on a badminton sized court with a hollow polymer ball.

Big thank you to our Health Promotion Nurse, Mel White, who organised this initiative for our school. Mel wanted to introduce this sport to our students as exercise and mental health go hand-in-hand.  It is really quick and easy to learn and doesn't require a huge skill set to pick it up.  It's also a fun and fast game!

The Year 9 & 10 Girls Basketball team competed in interschool sports on Thursday 13th October.

The team was ruthless in the pool matches, easily accounting for Bellarine (SC 37- B 16) and Grovedale (SC 33- B 2). Moving through to the semi-final the team faced Western Heights 2, producing some excellent team basketball to come away 1 point winners in a close match (SC 16- WH 15). This win meant that the girls would face the highly fancied Western Heights 1 in the final.

With only a short break between the semi-final and final, Western Heights started strongly as the Surf Coast girls looked tired. However, SCSC worked their way into the game on the back of some excellent offensive plays from Sienna McC and Bella B. Taking a slight lead into the second half, Surf Coast continued to defend gallantly and play strong team basketball. With the scores tied heading into the final 30 seconds the team shut down Western Heights to force a draw and 5 minutes of extra time. With the crowd building, the Surf Coast girls got out to an early lead but were quickly reeled back in by Western Heights. Taking a 1 point lead into the final minute, the Surf Coast girls had an unlucky umpiring decision go against them and with time expiring were unable to get the ball back, eventually losing in heartbreaking fashion by 1 point (WH 23- SC 22).

Throughout the day the team showed excellent sportsmanship and played great team basketball, representing the school in an exceptional manner. For a team with members that had never played basketball before to nearly defeat a team from a basketball academy school was an excellent result and one that all team members should be proud of.

Intermediate Boys Basketball

After a large showing to try outs a team of 9 went to intermediate Boys basketball on Thursday 13 October.  The boys were placed in a tough grouping, playing a strong Newcomb SC team in our first game, unfortunately losing a close game in the dying seconds of the game.

The second game saw the boys play the overall winner of the day in Bellarine SC. With some high quality players Bellarine got off to a flying start and our boys were unable to chase them down, this was a high quality game with the scores being 26 – 50 in a game of 2 x 10 minutes halves.

The final game of the day was for the minor placings of the day, where Surf Coast played Northern Bay, a significant win in this game which saw the boys enjoy some successful and have some fun in concluding the day.

The most important thing and it was great to see throughout the day was the high level of teamwork, sportsmanship, and persistence the boys showed which saw them represent themselves and Surf Coast Secondary college in a great manner and they should be proud of their efforts.

FLOURISH: The SCSC Sports Academy students were luck enough to attend a recent excursion at Geelong Sports Medicine Centre.

The students heard from the practitioners at the centre regarding recovery methods, rehab modalities and the benefits of a multi-disciplinary approach.

We had a tour of the centre, including the hydrotherapy facility and new ice bath, plus participated in a range of activities including Yoga, Reformer Pilates and a workout in the High Performance Gym.

Well done to all the students on their enthusiastic participation and thank you to Emma and Nick Jarman for opening up your facilities to us.

Wathaurong Football

STRIVE: One of our students Myles B played in the VACSAL Senior Football Carnival for the Wathaurong Djilang Warriors team a fortnight ago.  He was lucky enough to take the field with his brother Lewis and father Ryan.

It was a wonderful community event and an amazing opportunity to connect with other other Indigenous teams and culture.
