Community Update

As Term 3 comes to an end we would like to continue to acknowledge the hard work and effort our students and their families have put into continuing their learning as we have moved back and forth between onsite and remote learning.  As the end of term draws closer, we encourage students to continue to engage in their learning including joining their morning Webex meetings with their teachers and class, this time is not only important to set them up for the day but also to maintain a sense of connectedness to their teacher and peers.

3/4 Excursion

The 3/4s were so lucky to squeeze in a fantastic excursion to the Ballarat Wildlife Park on Friday August 20. Although it started as a chilly morning, students across all campus boarded the bus in beanie’s, jackets, scarves with huge smiles ready for a fun day out! Students loved getting the opportunity to see koalas, birds, tigers and crocodiles just to name a few. The highlight of the day for both staff and students were the quirky little Meerkats and the way they stood in rows extremely still watching the students eat their lunch. The Kangaroos were very well fed, with students having the opportunity to hand feed them an endless supply of food.

Book Week 2021

During week 7, we celebrate the Book Week 2021 theme of “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. Students and teachers dressed up for their morning Webex meetings and shared their favourite books and characters during their morning meetings. The highlight of the week was watching the videos of our Campus Leaders reading this year’s prize-winning books in lots of different outfits in crazy and entertaining ways.

RUOK? Day

On Thursday September 9, students across the College participated in RUOK Day - a day dedicated to inspiring and empowering everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them by asking the simple question “Are you OK?” Now could be a great time to ask someone around you “Are you OK? and to support them in the event that they are struggling. More than ever, we need to be aware of how we are tracking with our mental health and the mental health of others. To encourage our students, families and staff to do this we stepped away from our normal lesson structure for the day and participated in different types of activities online and offline to focus on our mental health and well-being.

Year 6 Information Reports

Throughout term 3 students have been developing skills in researching efficiently and being able to collect information for their report writing. Students have enjoyed developing information reports and researching different adaptations that animals have.

It has been great to see different presentations that have shown non-fiction text features and also great creativity in how they present these during remote learning.

HASS

During Term 3, students have been learning about Animal Adaptations. In this Science unit, students learned that living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment. Students analysed how the form of living things enables them to function in their environments and that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behaviour, and reproduction.

To demonstrate their understanding of the concepts taught, students were asked to use an online software program called TinkerCAD to design an animal of their choice that had adaptations to suit their environment. Students then went on to learn about plants structures and adaptations and the five different biomes that exist in our world.  They then used this information to design a biome to suit their animal, again using TinkerCAD.

This unit required students to employ the skills of critical and creative thinking as they predict, observe, infer and explain observations and experimental results. Literacy skills were developed by the use of new scientific vocabulary in the correct context. Design skills were developed with adjustments, as students reflected on their design and the adaptations needed for the animal to survive within the environment (biome) they created.
