Dream City was a fun, interactive experience used to teach children how to do a job. Many useful, cool and creative tools were used. Things like a VR headset, a fitness test, podcasting/radio recording studio and a news set. The year 7/8s from across Northern Bay College visited there during week 4, and they found it really fun. The excursion then moved onto the Melbourne Cricket Ground. We were taken on a tour of the MCG, learning all about the history and construction of the famous landmark, and the pivotal role it has played in the city's rich sporting history. The excursion was tied in to the Year 7/8’s Education Research Project (ERP), which was ‘Business and Economics’, which shows you how businesses, careers and jobs work - Reginald Roylance
Prior to our current lockdown, year 9 Systems Engineering and DigiSTEM students were lucky enough to attend two days hands-on at the Geelong Tech School, completing The Last Mile project. This project was developed with Ford, aiming to find solutions to the challenge of easily getting people to and from their home to nearby public transport stops (the so-called ‘last mile’).
On day one of the program, students designed, built and raced a hovercraft.
On the second day, students were introduced to CAD (computer-assisted design) modelling using Autodesk’s Fusion 360 software. Students learnt advanced CAD skills using this tool and created a 3D model of their smart mobility vehicle to solve the last mile challenge.
Just like that we are back here again. Remote learning has been in full swing for the back half of term 3. We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the students who have been able to transition between on-site and remote learning seamlessly, and a big thank-you to all the parents and guardians supporting the students during such a difficult time, and always assisting with a focus on teaching and learning. Some great pieces of work have been submitted over the past three week's for all curriculum areas. An example of this is the commitment and dedication shown by students towards completing their narrative writing pieces. Students have been working hard in creating narratives that involve great vocabulary, settings, characters and storylines.
During week 9 we celebrated RUOK Day for 2021. Students throughout the 7-9 community were involved in some amazing activities during remote learning, or whilst on-site. The focal point this year was educating everyone on the significance of checking in on those around them. With this year's focus being, are they ‘really’ ok? It was great to centre our attention on the importance of connection with others, which at the moment is especially important. It was great to hear and see so many students wanting to learn how to support people, learning what to say and do when faced with someone struggling with life's ups and downs, and how best to check in on their peers.
COVID-19 is still affecting many individuals, families, businesses and communities around the world, including Geelong. For children and adults alike: ‘We Need to Stick Together’ during this challenging time. I have written a song and made a music video about COVID-19 that provides some tips for good hygiene and safety relating to COVID-19 (e.g. washing hands, keeping our distance). May it also bring a little bit of joy, hope and unity to you, your family, your loved ones and to all corners of the globe. It is dedicated to all the front-line workers and essential workers who work so hard to keep their communities safe. Let’s all do our best to play our part! Please stay safe and well.
