Loft Room

This term the children of the Loft Room have been delving into the weird and wonderful world of Pirates. The children are learning about the different perspectives of the pirate world and forming their own opinions about them. They have used this engagement and this is evident in the writing pieces they are sharing on Seesaw. Some children have even acted out being a real pirate and have created and recorded narratives and dramatic plays.

This Semester, the children have shown great interest in Space and our place in it. This connects to our unit of inquiry ‘Our Place in Space'. We are journeying through Spacetime to seek the answers to their questions. We are discovering the uniqueness of our planet and just like the porridge that Goldilocks ate in the Three Bears' house, it is just right to sustain life.

This is just the beginning, as the Loft Room is using this foundation as a launch pad into our Playworld.  The book we are reading is Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman. The book acts as an anchor for us to explore the science of space, time and our planet. With the use of their time machines, the children have been transported to outer space and met the dad and his two children. Now that they have met the main characters in the story, it's time to travel through space and time!

The children have also been exploring how we organise ourselves and why organisation is important to us, which leads us into our second unit of inquiry, ‘People Use Spaces’. They met with Sam Otto, a landscape architect, who guided us through the criteria and process of redesigning our classroom space. Since then, the children have been delving into the needs of our classroom community and how we can tell our story. They have begun organising their thinking by identifying how our space is being used, problems with those spaces, and coming up with creative solutions. As we move towards the concepts of Measurement and Area, this unit lends itself to understanding the tools of measurement, how and why we measure. Children will use this understanding to co-design a model of their ideal space, following the four criterion: Cost, Safety, Community Needs and Rules/Laws.
