Foundation

This week in Foundation, we continued to demonstrate our strength and resilience as we engaged in learning online once again. As communicators, we confidently shared our thinking with each other on our Google Meets, displaying courage and enthusiasm. As self-managers, we listened respectfully, demonstrated responsibility with our learning and continued to persist with any challenges we faced.

As mathematicians, we continued to explore the concept of Subtraction. We used counters and tens frames to help us take different amounts away from the total. As thinkers, we solved different number stories and made connections to Subtraction. In our Google Meets we played lots of different games to help us consolidate our understanding. We are also continuing to consolidate our addition skills, order and sequence numbers and identify before and after numbers.

As writers, we continued to write short Information Texts about people, places, animals and objects. In our Google Meets, we collaborated to write Information Texts about Mrs Watson and Mrs Wenckoswki, before going off to write our own. Some of us wrote about AFL, cats, summer and our family members.  As thinkers, we made sure to include true facts in our writing, while also remembering our capital letters, spaces, full stops and sight words. We are also continuing to practise our CVC words and apply our knowledge of blends and digraphs.

As inquirers, we tuned in to our History unit by activating our prior knowledge about what we think life was like for our parents, grandparents and great grandparents many years ago. This week, as communicators, we will take the time to interview them to find out what school was like for them and the games they played. As readers, we listened to the story ‘I’m Australian Too’ and made connections to our own lives by sharing where we were born, where our parents were born and where our grandparents were born. We were so curious about all the different cultures in our little learning community. Over the coming weeks, we will identify similarities and differences between how they lived and how we live now.

Whilst engaging in learning at home, many of us are taking the time to solve puzzles, engage in cooking and science experiments, draw and paint pictures, create obstacle courses and build and construct towers and structures. Here are some photos of what we have been up to…

Year 1/2

We would like to congratulate the Year 1 and 2 students for displaying such a positive attitude towards another round of Remote Learning. The students have continued to enthusiastically engage in remote learning, showing their skills as responsible e-learners who continue to be respectful communicators through Google Meets. A big thank you to all the parents and carers for their ongoing support during this time.

On Friday we engaged in a Wellbeing day. On this day we wore the colour Yellow to show our positivity during lockdown. As thinkers, we have been reflecting on the De Bono hats and how we can express our thoughts and feelings. The Yellow hat represents positivity and hope.

We took some time today to reflect on our remote learning journey by going on a nature hunt, constructing objects, drawing, baking, gardening and playing board games with our siblings.

As curious learners, we investigated some opinion writing. We constructed arguments and gave reasons for our opinions, making sure to choose topics that we were interested in. Some of our favourite topics were:

  • Would you prefer a cat or a dog?
  • What is the best food ever?
  • Should your school get a pool?

Check out some of our very persuasive opinion pieces here!

As Mathematicians, we have been learning about all the different strategies that could help us add numbers together efficiently. We have been learning how to add on a number line, how to add to the next ten and how to figure out missing addends from a sum. We were confident and courageous as we took on the many different challenges in learning addition via Google Meets, and we did an amazing job! As open-minded thinkers, we will continue to explore some different strategies to help us add numbers together.

As members of a Catholic learning community, we have been learning about forgiveness and why it is important to ask for forgiveness, and to forgive others. This week, we read the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.

Here are some of the reflections gathered during Google Meets:

It is important to forgive people to be more like Jesus - Ben.B

I think that the moral of the story is to forgive others like you have been forgiven - Madalen.S

I think that the king was being nice by not forcing the servant pay him back when he didn’t have the money - Leon.D

To demonstrate our understanding of the story, we summarised the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant using a storyboard. Check them out here!

We have loved seeing your learning over the past couple of weeks. It makes us so proud to see the dedication towards your learning, whether you are learning from home or at school.

We look forward to seeing your lovely smiling faces on Google Meets and we look forward to all the amazing learning that will be happening next week!

Kind regards,

Belinda Filippone, Maria Delaney and Stefanie Carriera

Year 3/4

This week in 3/4 we are revising the strategies used to derive deeper understanding of text.  These strategies include asking questions and wondering about the text; making connections to the characters, events and themes in the text and reflecting on their thinking of what the text is about and what they understand from it.

In Maths we are looking at Perimeter as being the sum of the outside measurements of a shape or closed space.  The students will practice the formula, problem solve to find missing values and create enclosed spaces based on the criteria provided on their perimeter.

On Tuesday we are taking part in a Science Webinar on the change in the length of day and night throughout the year.  This begins at 1pm on Tuesday but students are asked to be ready by 12:50pm. We would be grateful if you could help students with the instructions and you are welcome to watch and participate with your child.  The instructions are found in their learning pack.

Our students of the week for last week were:

3/4GT - Isabella Joson

3/4MM - Joseph Falcone

3/4KD - Thomas Cicero and Francesco Fazzari

Congratulations to these students and to all who have continued to work well in class.

3/4 Team,

Graham Troy, Mark MacGregor, Katarina Davidson

Year 5/6

Congratulations to all our 5/6 students who have been learning online and joining us regularly on Google Meets!

This week we have been exploring Edward De Bono’s Thinking ‘Hats’.  The yellow ‘hat’ signifies positive and optimistic thinking and what we should be grateful for whereas the black ‘hat’ signifies what we need to be careful of and negative thinking.  We have explored how at times, particularly during remote learning, we can feel both these emotions at various times of the day.

The students were excited to participate in a ‘Well Being’ day on Friday where they had the opportunity to undertake a variety of activities.  These included craft, origami, exercise, music, reading and writing activities just to name a few.  This day is important to promote well being and gives the students a chance to undertake an activity that they are passionate about.
