LITERACY - Di Manthos

This week is National science week.National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. In partnership with Scienceworks and Melbourne museum, students will be participating in virtual experiences on Science. The following incursions have been organised for all students to be involved in.  We have organised incursions for all students from F - 6 to experience something new this week around Science.

Foundations students:- School yard Bugs- In this virtual incursion, students will work in an online setting with museum staff to learn about the fascinating world of bugs.Students examine the external features of insects, spiders and other arthropods, while also learning about scientific methods of classification. They will identify common schoolyard bugs and meet some amazing and unusual bugs from Museums Victoria’s entomology collection.

Years 3-6- ‘Secrets of the Sky’-Students will be taken on a journey to the stars and visible planets as well as gain insight into seasonal variations in the day night cycle. Easily identifiable constellations will be explored, including the Boorong constellations (the constellations of the Wergaia Indigenous peoples from northwest Victoria). The session will answer questions such as why we see the same side of the Moon! As an added bonus, students will learn how to use the Stellarium program so they can continue the journey in their own time.

Years 1 / 2 ‘Light up my World’-  Students will participate in an interactive virtual incursion where students work with a Scienceworks learning facilitator to uncover the science behind light and colour. How are rainbows formed? Can you make coloured shadows? Can you always trust what your eyes see?Students will be wowed and entertained as they are facilitated by a Scienceworks presenter in a series of experiments with light and colour. These experiments will uncover what white light is made up of, how it bends when it moves through or is blocked by different materials and what happens when that light reaches our eyes.

Interschool Sport News

Due to the extended lockdown, we are now no longer able to conduct the SSV Coburg District Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 25 August or on our back-up day on Wednesday 1 September. The Inner North/Moreland Division Athletics Championships will now be moved to a date between Monday Oct 18 - Friday Oct 22. (TBC).

The Northern Metropolitan Region  Athletics Championships will be moved to November 3.

The State Athletics Championships will now be moved to November 18.

Advice form SSV is to try to conduct District Athletics in the beginning 2 weeks of Term 4. This may be difficult to do due to existing track bookings, however, enquiries will be made to see if there are any available dates. Stay tuned!

State Cross Country has been cancelled.

Region Cross Country - at this stage looks like being cancelled, however, an announcement will be made after August 30th.

All District, Division, Region, State Winter Finals (AFL, Soccer, Netball, TBall)  have been cancelled.

Further Information regarding Division / Region and State Finals for Summer Sports should be available by the end of this week.

Usually, SSV Coburg District conducts Summer Sport Finals at the end of Term 3, however, more than likely this is not going to be possible. These finals may be conducted at the beginning of Term 4.

I know the postponements and cancellations are extremely disappointing for everyone concerned, especially our students. Hopefully, things will get better sooner rather than later. Please stay tuned for further updates.
