Senior Girls Soccer

The Senior Girls’ Soccer team came into the day without much expectation, as the team had little experience in the way of soccer. The girls did approach the day with great enthusiasm and a desire to have fun. After a bye during the first round the girls then played against Westernport. The Westernport girls had convincingly won their first match. However right from the start the Dromana girls showed a great intent. They chased and tackled hard and followed the team policy of ‘see ball, kick ball’ very closely. As the game progressed the girls’ understanding of the rules and the game improved and they began to score goal after goal. In the end they comprehensively won 6 – 0!!

Ellie Brasser, Maddie ‘Derek’ Gould and Liana Samson-Piniata dominated the forward half, running rings around their opponents. They were ably supported by Tilly Hopkins in midfield and Chelsea Hutchins and Talitha Bladen in defence. Highlights included skipper Niamh Noonan’s cartwheels at the defensive end as our goalkeeper, Lara French crunched a girl and then stopped to apologise, and Ellie Baird’s screaming.

In a bizarre twist to the second game, Mt Eliza recruited the best 5 girls from Westernport to play for them. Not quite sure how that works, but we decided that the best thing to do would be to beat them as well. The first half was a tight, scoreless affair. Talitha, Chelsea, Krystabel Forward and Amelia Long held the team together at the back and we were able to then attack with the wind in the second half. Our relentless surges forward were eventually too much for the combined side and goals to Derek Gould and Frankie ‘Don’t play in defence’ Montgomery were enough to win the game and take us through to the next round.

Well done to the girls. Not only for the win but, more importantly, how they conducted themselves and represented the College. They were polite and respectful whilst having a great time. There were plenty of laughs throughout the day.

A massive thanks to Hudson ‘The Birthday Boy’ Blake, Merrick Snow and Jess Andrews for their help throughout the day.

Bring on the next round!!

Dance News at Dromana College

Back in Term 2 we were very lucky to fit in our end of semester Dance Performance Evening in May, and the students loved having the opportunity to get up on stage and perform for their family and friends again!

The first half featured Ms Dunphy’s Year 9 Dance class; both their small group performances and the whole class dance. The second half featured the Dance Club. Dance club includes over 40 students from Years 7 – 11, who rehearse every Tuesday morning before school, demonstrating their ongoing commitment by often arriving in the dark, cold and sometimes wet winter mornings. They soon warm up once the music starts and the dance warm up begins. They performed their Hip Hop number choreographed by Ms Keelor and the lyrical / contemporary number choreographed by Ms Johnson. The second half included both the VCE Dance classes (Year 11 and 12 levels) performing their Learnt Dance, choreographed by student teacher Sarah Mann, based on the theme of machines: people who operate them and machines themselves. Each of the VCE Dance students also presented their Unit 1 and Unit 3 skills solos.

Overall, we had a most successful night celebrating dance at the college and we felt very privileged to achieve a performance to share with the college while we could!

Our end of Semester 2 Performance Evening is scheduled for late October 2021, however, this will be dependent on the restrictions at the time.

WAKAKIRRI

Our fabulous, dedicated and completely committed Wakakirri Student Leadership Team of Liana, Alley, Krystabel, Bess and Karis have been working tirelessly choreographing and running rehearsals with the three different groups. Our costumes arrived in time for what was meant to be our official performance day in August. As with many things in life, this has been postponed to October 25th at the Frankston Arts Centre. We truly hope the restrictions lift and this can go ahead after two years of work! In the meantime, our juniors and intermediates have just returned to rehearse each Thursday online with our student leaders. Ms Beattie and myself (Ms Sabell) have been really impressed by the mature approach all our students have shown towards the production and the commitment and resilience they continue to demonstrate.

Wheelchair Basketball

On Wednesday 4th of August, our Year 10 & 11 Vet Sport and Recreation students were treated to a fabulous day out (thankfully just before Lockdown 6.0) to the State Basketball Centre in Knox. They got to experience the amazing world of Wheelchair Basketball and be instructed by wheelchair athlete, Jontee Brown, who-coincidentally, lives with a Paralympian chair athlete who competed in Tokyo at the Paralympic Games!! 😊.

In line with their studies on inclusive practices and providing equal opportunities in Sport, Fitness and Recreation, students were taught several skills in controlling the chair and the ball, before engaging in some friendly competition.  Needless to say, it was an extremely demanding and difficult skill set to grasp, however, all students participated with enthusiasm and determination to overcome the obstacle of ‘the chair’ v ‘the legs’!

We all walked away with sore arms, a smile on our faces, and a newfound appreciation for the athleticism and skill required to play at such an elite level as our Paralympians. It was a memorable experience, enjoyed by all… Go the Rollers!
