Apps to Ensure You Have a Musical Lockdown

As we are all aware, one of the casualties of lockdown is the fact we can no longer perform Music together or participate in face to face lessons. However, help is literally at hand! There are a plethora of Apps, many of which are free, available to support students and inspire  students on their musical journey.

‘PlayAlong Violin’, ‘PlayAlong Guitar’ and ‘PlayAlong Flute’ are excellent for beginner musicians. These Apps listen as you play your instrument, guiding you through the melody of a selected song.  ‘Guitar Songs’ is a free App that provides a wealth of song charts for guitarist to play along with , whilst ‘Fender Play‘ offers  a series of short lessons for the beginner guitarist.

For the more advanced students ‘Toplayalong.com’ provides scores and backing tracks  for Flute, Violin, Trumpet, Alto Sax, Clarinet and Cello to some of the most famous  classical masterpieces. e.g Rimsky–Korsakov’s ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’.

For students who wish to improve their Sight Reading skills in readiness for the return of exams, ‘The Sight Reading Factory’ is worth perusing. ‘Perfect Ear’ is another free App which provides theory and aural training activities.   On this App you can practise such skills as interval identification, rhythm patterns and chord progressions.

These are just a few of the many musical applications available in today’s digital world. I encourage you to take the opportunity to explore what is out there. Perhaps one of the positives to come of this lockdown might be unlocking a new skill or two.
