Hadley's Art Prize
Year 12 student, Elizabeth Scott, has won the (inaugural) student category of the Hadley's Art Prize. Open to enrolled Year 11 and 12 students from all over Australia, this is the first year for the student category of the prize and, as you can see, Elizabeth has set a high precedent with her lino-print titled "My Mothers’ Hat". A different piece of Elizabeth's work was also used on the cover of the 2020 school magazine, Echoes.
“My Mother’s Hat is a self-portrait that explores my connection to kunanyi,” Elizabeth said. “I hope I have captured her life and her mystery.”
The Executive Dean and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the College of Arts, Law and Education at the University of Tasmania, Professor Kate Darian-Smith, presented the prize to Elizabeth in a small ceremony in July.
Nanna Bayer Special Visit
At the end of Term 2, our Ceramics A students were fortunate to have a couple of sessions with renowned ceramicist, Nanna Bayer.
Nanna specialises in the Japanese nerikomi technique, utilising very thin, delicate and colourful porcelain to create functional and sculptural objects. Nanna was an early pioneer of this technique in her homeland of Finland when she started the practice 30 years ago, and she has since developed a signature style that has won her international recognition and acclaim.
Our students had two sessions with Nanna:
Session one was preparing the porcelain with stains, to colour the clay and then create the patterns. Session 2 involved rolling out slabs of patterned clay to make a variety of items including cups, dishes and small platters.
Thank you very much to Nanna for taking the time to visit our students and work so closely with them.
Marimba Concert
What an amazing (and funky) evening! Our Marimba Concert was a big success and particularly special as it was the last concert for Morris music teacher, Kerry Bennett, who is heading off to work with the Festival of Voices. The students gave her a very heartfelt farewell and Kerry got to play a special piece of her choosing with the other staff members.
A big thank you to percussionists Katherine Betts and Joshua Webster from Kaboom Percussion who have been running workshops with the students and who were generous enough to join in on the evening and give us a demonstration of their remarkable skills and instruments.
